Newspaper Articles Newspaper Articles 18th January 1889 Colliery Fatality at Ryhope On Saturday last, an inquest was held at the house of Mr. Loraine, Ryhope Colliery, on the body of William Dann, a young man 18 years of age, who was employed as a putter in the Maudlin seam in the pit. On the 10th inst., deceased was found dead by two workmen named Thomas Greenwell and James George. He was lying across the rail, and his pony, attached to a tub, was standing a little distance off. Deceased appeared to have been crushed. His head and body were injured. There was no blame attached to anyone about the pit. A verdict of "Death by being accidently crushed" was returned.
