The Whitehaven Colliery Explosion
Latest News
The bodies of Burns, William Hanlon, and James Rowe, of Denwood, killed by the explosion in the William pit, Whitehaven, on Tuesday, were brought to the surface of the colliery last night at 10 o'clock. The men were discovered 66 yards from the face of the drift. They were huddled together. Burns with his face to the ground, suggestive of an effort to escape the fumes. They were found by Mr. Steele, manager of the adjacent colliery, Wellington pit, who, along with Mr. Turner, manager, Mr. Blair, surveyor, and the under manager, had been continually at work since the explosion. Mr. Atkinson, inspector of mines, and Mr. Abbott, his assistant, together with Mr. V. T. Moore, mining engineer, and Mr. Williams, rendered great assistance in the superintendence of the task of reaching the men.
