FIORETTA MAZZEI AND THE CITY

{Sono stato invitato a rendere omaggio a Fioretta e in inglese in onore degli ospiti di lingua inglese qui presenti. Non sar� io, tuttavia, a parlare di Fioretta, di lei parler� Giovanna, e in particolare del rapporto tra Fioretta e il Libro, il Libro dei libri, 'La Bibbia'. Io parler� del sogno di Fioretta, che � poi il sogno di Firenze, vale a dire del come Fioretta ha trasmesso la visione a cui per secoli Firenze � stata fedele. Non lo far� naturalmente soltanto con le parole di Fioretta, ma intreccer� le sue parole con le mie idee. Per me � infatti molto difficile disgiungere quel che sento e penso da quello che Fioretta mi ha insegnato.

I have been asked to speak in honour of Fioretta Mazzei and to speak in English in honour of the guests present who speak English. I won't speak about Fioretta, Giovanna will speak about her and above all the relationship between Fioretta and the book, the book of books, the Bible. I will speak of the dream of Fioretta, which is the dream of Florence, that is, how Fioretta transmitted the vision to which Florence has been faithful for centuries. Naturally I won't do this only in Fioretta's words, but will blend them with my ideas because it is so difficult to separate what I feel and think from what Fioretta taught me.

Giovanni Pico della Mirandola in "De hominis dignitate" (The Dignity of Man), wrote that the essential difference between animals and man lies in the freedom the latter possesses to choose whether to be worse than an animal or lift himself up to the level of angels.

E' stato detto dopotutto, che l'atto supremo dell'uomo � la contemplazione, vale a dire la percezione di una speciale illuminazione.

How many men have spent their whole lives in struggle, war and revolution in order to "change society"?

Quanti uomini hanno speso la loro vita in lotte, in guerre e rivoluzioni per "trasformare la societ�"?

Only beauty can change society. What would Florence be without the Palazzo della Signoria, without Orsanmichele, without Brunelleschi's cupola, the symmetry that connects the granary to the most spectacular civic and religious buildings? An outward and inner symmetry.

Solo la bellezza pu� trasformare la societ�. Che cosa sarebbe Firenze senza Palazzo della Signoria, senza Orsanmichele, senza la cupola del Brunelleschi, senza la simmetria che congiunge il granaio alle pi� straordinarie costruzioni civili e religiose? Una simmetria estrinseca ed intrinseca.

Next to the Cathedral, in the Bigallo Loggia, there is a fresco not very often seen by tourists, that was painted when Brunelleschi's dome did not yet exist, but which contains the dome's intrinsic meaning: it is the Madonna of Mercy shielding the city beneath her cloak.

Accanto alla Cattedrale, nella Loggia del Bigallo, � custodito un affresco sovente ignorato dai turisti, che risale all'epoca in cui la cupola del Brunelleschi non esisteva ancora, ma che racchiude l'intrinseco significato della cupola: � la Madonna della Misericordia che sotto il suo manto protegge la citt�.

How can mercy protect a whole community? To bend oneself to the needs of the weak means taking care of all the citizens, because by caring for the bare human being, the city demonstrates that it is humanity that it prizes, without regard for the money or power that any individual possesses, which is a safeguard for the wealthy too, inasmuch as it is their human dignity that is valued more than their power.

Come pu� la misericordia proteggere un'intera comunit�? Protendersi verso i bisogni dei deboli significa prendersi cura di tutti i cittadini, in quanto prendendosi cura del nudo essere umano, la citt� dimostra che � l'umanit� che essa ha cara, senza alcun interesse per il denaro o il potere di ogni singolo, garanzia anche per i ricchi, proprio in quanto la dignit� umana � pi� preziosa del potere.

Another aspect of this fresco makes it even more of a theological key to the Renaissance. The Madonna is the earth itself, into which God descends and dispenses his influence over the city. And this is being represented very well in her life by Fioretta

Un altro aspetto di questo affresco lo rende ancor pi� una chiave teologica per interpretare il Rinascimento. La Madonna � la stessa terra, sulla quale Dio discende dispensando il suo aiuto alla citt�. Questo � stato molto bene incarnato da Fioretta con la sua vita.

Brunelleschi's dome therefore represents both the Madonna's cloak, as well as the earth, created as an expression and image of the creator. This I believe to be the fundamental intuition of the Renaissance in contrast with times, before and after, when nature is considered sinful or merely instrumental.

Dunque la cupola del Brunelleschi simboleggia sia il manto della Madonna sia la terra, creata come espressione ed immagine del Creatore. Questo credo sia la fondamentale intuizione del Rinascimento in contrasto con i secoli precedenti e successivi, quando la natura viene considerata peccaminosa o semplicemente strumentale.

I'm inclined to think that the Renaissance began with Dante's Divine Comedy and was suppressed by the death of Savonarola in 1498.

Sono incline a pensare che il Rinascimento ebbe inizio con la Divina Commedia di Dante e fu soffocato con la morte di Savonarola nel 1498.

What happened between these two events, confused with many human weaknesses, is the rise of a kind of worldly peace based on inspired imitation of natural beauty.

Il modello del giardino-frutteto appartato fu adottato nelle dimore dei mercanti, negli ospedali, nella citt� tutta. Persino le botteghe degli artigiani avevano i loro piccoli frutteti con un fico ad evocare silenzio e contemplazione.

In Florence's vision man and nature, the city and the surrounding countryside are harmonious parts of the whole, inasmuch as they share the secret of measured balance: a "microcosm" of the Universe.

One of the most important aspects of beauty lies in the harmony of the minor components. The town and the countryside are clearly separate, but the town's buildings used to host the green orchards and the countryside is humanized by walls, roads, dwellings and ordered plants.

And this is the sign inside the city of this order which comes out of the spirit.

During the fifteenth century the artists used science to understand man's place in the world. Nature was a teacher and men her pupils: no contrast in this between religion and science. Any simple, illiterate man could read in nature's book because, as St. Thomas Aquinas had stated, there is an objective knowledge of reality that rises spontaneously in every man, even before the use of language.

Nel Quattrocento gli artisti comprendevano quale fosse il posto dell'uomo nel mondo tramite la scienza. La natura era maestra e gli uomini suoi discepoli: nessuna opposizione in questo tra religione e scienza. Ogni uomo semplice, ogni illetterato pu� leggere nel libro della natura poich�, seguendo San Tommaso d'Aquino vi � una conoscenza oggettiva della realt� che spontaneamente nasce in ogni uomo, persino prima dell'uso del linguaggio.

But conflict had arisen between the Renaissance idea of creation as instrument to discover God's bounty in the variety of his creatures on one side and on the other the everlasting ambition for possession through separation between body and soul.

Ma un conflitto era sorto tra l'idea rinascimentale della creazione come strumento per cogliere la generosit� di Dio nella variet� delle sue creature da una parte e l'incessante ambizione di possesso a causa della separazione tra anima e corpo dall'altra.

Savonarola , who is the prophet of Florence forever, preaches a social order rooted in God's revelation. Nature for him stands higher than a work of art, because the best painter can never attain his natural model. So art should imitate nature in its dialogue with God, not inducing material greed but evoking the spiritual beauty of creation.

Savonarola, che rimane il profeta di Firenze per sempre, predica un ordine sociale radicato nella rivelazione di Dio. La natura � per lui pi� nobile di un'opera d'arte, poich� anche il miglior pittore mai pu� possedere la natura suo modello. L'arte dovrebbe cos� imitare la natura nel suo dialogo con Dio, non suscitando bramosia materiale ma evocando la bellezza spirituale del creato.

The highest intuition of the Renaissance dream is a society with a common ethic, in harmony with science and religion, where the human being, in symbiosis with nature, is capable of enhancing the natural forces.

La pi� alta intuizione del sogno rinascimentale � una societ� con una etica comune, in armonia con scienza e religione, dove l'essere umano, in simbiosi con la natura, � in grado di migliorarne le forze.

Dante had to remain in exile, Savonarola was hanged and burned. Western civilisation from that fire slowly started to consider the Renaissance as an ideal of the soul, a utopia, but not as a practical human project. The realm of an order based on separation between nature and man had again taken the lead.

Dante dovette rimanere in esilio, Savonarola fu impiccato e bruciato sul rogo. La civilt� occidentale da quel fuoco lentamente cominci� a considerare il Rinascimento come un ideale dell'anima, un'utopia, ma non come un concreto progetto umano. Il regno di un ordine fondato sulla separazione tra la natura e l'uomo aveva nuovamente preso il sopravvento.

A century later, the modern science of mathematics, with Descartes, Torricelli and Bacon, as opposed to Fibonacci's observations of natural curves, stops being interested in nature as a source of truth; from then on truth only emerges from scientific theories. Scientists no longer learn from nature but judge her as if she had been found guilty. Nature is seen as a machine without sanctity, or soul, that must be torn to pieces and reassembled not for beauty but for efficiency. And as a result we have abandoned the natural environment and we pass our lives in machines.

Un secolo pi� tardi, la moderna scienza matematica, con Descartes, Torricelli e Bacone, come contrapposta alle osservazioni di Fibonacci delle curve della natura, cess� di interessarsi della natura come fonte di verit�. Da allora in poi la verit� � fatta derivare soltanto dalle teorie scientifiche. Gli scienziati non apprendono pi� dalla natura ma giudicano la natura come portatrice di una colpa. La natura � vista come una macchina senza santit�, o senza anima, che deve essere fatta a pezzi e rimessa insieme non per la bellezza ma per l'efficienza. L'esito � stato quello dell'abbandonato della natura e di una vita trascorsa in macchina.

Now western civilisation is witnessing the consequences on humanity and nature of this order of mind. The Renaissance dream is intact as an opportunity to challenge man to mend the environmental disaster and empower the capacity of the biosphere to recreate a pattern of fertility for the world, - and for the soul and body of the world.

La civilt� occidentale � oggi testimone degli effetti sull'umanit� e sulla natura di questo ordine di pensiero. Il sogno rinascimentale rimane immutato come opportunit� e sfida per l'uomo a riparare alla catastrofe ambientale e a potenziare la capacit� della biosfera di ricreare un modello di fertilit� per il mondo - per l'anima e per il corpo del mondo.

And I think that this is one of Fioretta Mazzei's messages for the present and the future.

Questo credo sia uno dei messaggi di Fioretta Mazzei per il presente ed il futuro.

{ Dovendo introdurre l'omaggio aFioretta Mazzei nel contesto di un Convegno internazionale dedicato a La Citt� e il Libro , non posso non raccontare il rapporto di lei col libro per eccellenza, la Bibbia.

In introducing Fioretta Mazzei in the context of an international congress dedicated to 'The City and the Book', one cannot but speak of her relationship to the book par excellence, the Bible.

La prima cosa che colpiva, una volta entrata nell'abitazione di Fioretta, era la presenza massiccia, ordinaria, quotidiana, dei libri.

The first thing that struck one, on entering Fioretta's apartment, was the massive, common, daily presence of books.

Li notavi dappertutto: sulle mensole d'ingresso, sovrapposti alle agende, sparsi sul tavolo di lavoro, nel disordine apparente di chi opera, cerca, riflette, prepara, consulta.

One noted them everywhere: on the table at the entrance, covering the engagement calendars, spread across the work table, in seeming disorder to those who work, seek, reflect, prepare, consult.

In mezzo ad essi lettere, scritti autografi appena sbozzati o gi� definiti; testi altrui sugli argomenti pi� disparati, corredati dalle immancabili dediche.

In the midst of these letters, her own writings just in draft form or already prepared; other texts on most diverse subjects, with inevitable dedications.

Tutto all'intorno, le pareti del soggiorno, il mitico soggiorno di Fioretta - meta e ritrovo del larghissimo cenacolo dei suoi amici come della sua "elastica" famiglia (che poteva crescere o diminuire per gli arrivi e le partenze frequenti) - tre lati del soggiorno - dicevo - erano occupati dalle vaste librerie, ricche di migliaia e spesso preziosi volumi.

All around, the walls of the dining room, Fioretta's mythic dining room - the meeting and gathering place of the great 'cenacolo' of her friends as well as her 'elastic' family (which could grow or shrink with the frequent arrivals and departures) - three walls of the dining room - as I was saying - were filled with great bookcases, enriched by thousands and often precious volumes.

Without taking into account the actual personal archive, containing many files of private and precious documents, exchanges of letters, received from the most noted and eminent names in the thought and of the world of Catholicism, of politics, and of art, both Italian and foreign.

Su quel bellissimo tavolo ovale, cos� ingombro e, per me, proprio per questo affascinante, dove non mancava quasi mai una scatola di cioccolatini o di caramelle per ingentilire - casomai ce ne fosse stato bisogno - la sua ospitalit� cos� speciale, unica: larga e sobria che sapeva accogliere ciascuna nella sua unicit�, esaltandola - su quel bellissimo tavolo ovale notavi sempre un libro fra gli altri, immancabile ed abituale come un breviario: la Bibbia.

On that very beautiful oval table, always laden and, for me, just because of this fascinating, where there never lacked at least a box of chocolates or of caramels to sweeten dispositions - though there would never be a need of that - her hospitality was so special, so unique: generous and sober who knew how to welcome each in their uniqueness, rejoicing in that - on this most beautiful oval table was always one book to be noted above all others, never lacking and habitually there, like a Breviary: the Bible.

Una Bibbia particolare, antica, dalla copertina di pelle, piuttosto piccola di formato, dunque maneggevole, fittamente sezionata di santini a mo' di segnalibri a ritrovare i passi pi� amati, frequentati da una riflessione personale instancabile.

One Bible in particular, an old one, with a cover of leather, rather small in size, and therefore manageable, with many prayer cards used as bookmarks to find the most loved passages, often consulted with a an untiring personal reflection.

La Bibbia, nella sua interezza, era certo il Libro per eccellenza della vita a delle scelte fondamentali di Fioretta Mazzei.

The Bible, in its entirety, was certainly the book par excellence for the life and fundamental choice of Fioretta Mazzei.

L�, cercava e trovava le risposte agli interrogativi della sua vita personale, ma anche - e forse sopprattutto - a quelli sempre pressanti e avvertiti ogni volta come decisivi - che riguardavano la vita e le scelte della Chiesa, locale e universale; la citt�, l'Italia, il Mondo.

In it she sought and found the answers to questions about her own life, but also - and perhaps above all - to ever pressing demands and considered these each time as important - regarding the life and choice of the Church, local and universal; the city, Italy, the world.

Del resto, sarei parziale e mistificante se non precisassi che il suo rapporto cos� vitale con la Parola eterna di Dio era intimamente collegato alla sua unione eucaristica col Signore.

However, I would be missing the point unless I specified that her vital relation with the eternal Word of God was intimately tied to her Eucharistic union with the Lord.

Il fondamento della fede di Fioretta affondava infatti nel mistero della persona di Cristo, nel rapporto intimo con Lui, a tu per tu.

The basis of Fioretta's faith was rooted in fact in the mystery of the person of Christ, in an intimate closeness with Him, as one to one.

Vi era cio� in lei, nella sua esperienza interiore e spirituale, un interscambio consapevolmente perseguito e divenuto come naturale, fra la lettura e l'ascolto della Parola eterna e l'amore ardente, vero nucleo essenziale, per l'Eucaristia.

There was thus in her, in her internal and spiritual experience, an exchange knowingly sought and which became as if natural, between the reading and the hearing of the eternal Word and ardent love, the truly essential nucleus, for the Eucharist.

" Ma pensa - mi disse un giorno a Roma, mentre stavamo passeggiando per Piazza Navona - Ges� corre nelle vene!" tanto forte era in lei l'unione col Cristo, che alimentava ogni giorno nella Messa e nella Comunione eucaristica e nel rendimento di grazie.

" But think" she said to me one day in Rome as we were walking through the Piazza Navona, " Jesus runs in our veins!" so strong in her was this union with Christ, who fed her each day at Mass and in the Eucharistic Communion and in the giving of thanks.

Dunque, ora possiamo entrare nel vivo della comprensione del suo rapporto con la Bibbia, Parola vivente dell'Altissimo che si � manifestato come salvezza nella storia dell'umanit� come di ciascuno.

Thus, we can now enter into a lively understanding of her relation with the Bible, the living Word of the Highest which was manifested as salvation in the story of all humanity as well as in each one of us.

Nel testo biblico, Fioretta Mazzei trovava il punto di vista di Dio sulla storia universale e personale. Le vicende del popolo d'Israele come gli eventi della vita di Cristo non sono mai stati letti da lei come fossero vicende d'archeologia religiosa, su cui gettare uno sguardo puramente scolastico o, peggio, erudito, col disincanto e il distacco di chi si accosta a fatti remoti ed inattuali.

In the Bible's text, Fioretta Mazzei found God's point of view in universal and individual history. The story of the people of Israel like the events of the life of Christ were never read by her as if they were the facts of religious archeology, upon which one casts an eye that is academic, or worse, erudite, disenchanted and detached as if one comes across distant, no longer present, facts.

Al contrario: in lei, ogni versetto delle letture della Messa, ogni rigo trovato nell'apparente casualit� di una pagina biblica aperta a caso, trovava ascolto e l'eco profonda di chi aspetta l'amato al varco del proprio cuore, nel lago silenzioso e quieto dell'anima e della memoria, ricca anche degli affetti terreni venuti, sempre e comunque, dal cuore di Dio "dove - come scrisse nell'introduzione al suo libro su Giorgio La Pira - nei momenti raccolti affiorano fatti, ricordi e pensieri insieme ".

On the contrary: in her, each verse of the reading at Mass, each line found in the seeming accident of a biblical page opened by chance, discovered a hearing and the profound echo of what awaits the lover in the opening of his own heart, in the silent and still place of the soul and of the memory, enriched also with worldly happenings, always and therefore, from the heart of God, " Where", she wrote in the introduction to her book on Giorgio La Pira, "in the gathered moments come together acts, memories and thoughts. "

La Bibbia costuitiva dunque, per lei come per Giorgio La Pira, la vera cifra interpretativa della storia degli uomini, dei popoli e della civilt� e le vicende dall'amatissimo popolo d'Israele, la metafora universale della libert� umana, del rapporto di fedelt� o di tradimento che apparenta tutti gli uomini e, con S. Paolo " li ha tutti rinchiusi - ebrei e gentili - nella disubbidienza per esser tutti liberati e salvati dal suo amore...affinch� nessuno possa gloriarsi, se non nel nome santo dell'Altissimo".

The Bible constituted therefore, for her as for Giorgio La Pira, the true interpretive key for the story of humanity, of peoples and of civilizations and the events of the most loved people of israel, the universal metaphor of human liberty, the relation of faith and betrayal shared by all men and, with St Paul, ' includes all - Hebrew and Gentile - in disobedience through being freed and saved through his love . . . so that none can glory, save in the holy name of the Highest'.

" Pi� di tutto fu la lettura della Bibbia ad ispirarlo: la gente confusa ed ammucchiata dell'Esodo, in fuga, i gridi della sofferenza e della fame, le macerie del dopoguerra, i barroccini degli sfratti, gli operai adirati dalla disoccupazione, tutti in marcia verso una terra promessa, da realizzare in fretta, verso una Gerusalemme da ricostruire ".

"More than anything the reading of the Bible inspired him: the lost and scrambling people of the Exodus, in flight, the cries of suffering and of hunger, the debris following the war, the carts of the evicted, the workers enbittered by unemployment, all in progress towards a promised land, to be realized hurriedly, towards a Jerusalem to rebuild."

Questo passo, cos� efficace e scolpito, con cui Fioretta racconta il rapporto di La Pira con la Bibbia, esprime in modo trasparente anche il suo proprio personale rapporto, che si era, d'altronde, mosso sempre in una simbiosi originale e tuttavia sempre libera con lui, in una reciprocit� di rapporto, feconda per entrambi: quella dei santi.

This effective, sculpted passage, with which Fioretta told of the relation of La Pira with the Bible, expresses clearly also her own personal relation, which was, on the other hand, moved always by an original symbiosis and always freely with him, in a reciprocal relationship, fertile for both of them, that of the saints.

E` proprio in questi giorni, per una felice coincidenza, � esposta nel cortile della dogana di questo Palazzo Vecchio la mostra documentaria che Fioretta, a pochi mesi dalla morte, ide� e realizz�, come ultimo omaggio a Giorgio La Pira, il suo grande amico, compagno d'avventura cristiana e di servizio alla citt� e alla Chiesa.

Right now, by a happy coincidence, is being shown in this very Palazzo Vecchio's courtyard the documentary exhibition that Fioretta, a few months before her death, planned and realized, as her last homage to Giorgio La Pira, her great friend, her companion in the Christian adventure of service to the city and the Church.

E ancora: " Fare un popolo consapevole, il popolo fiorentino consapevole dell'Alleanza, consapevole del suo battesimo cristiano, capace di vivere oggi questi valori ". Questa � stata la sua consegna, sempre espressa di nuovo, fino all'ultimo respiro.

And again, ' To make a people aware, the people of Florence conscious of the Testament, conscious of their Christian baptism, capable of living today these values". This was her commission, ever stated anew, even to her last breath.

Questa la parola-chiave della sua attitudine di cristiana. Esser consapevoli di ci� che siamo, del dono ricevuto ("Se tu conoscessi il dono di Dio! " - dice Ges� alla Samaritana, Gv.4,10) Per fare cosa? In vista di cosa? Per fare comunione, incarnare la fede, rendere efficace il dono ricevuto, trasformando la propria vita innanzitutto, e realizzando, nel servizio a Dio, ai poveri, alla citt�, la sintesi di fede e vita, di Parola e opere. In questo consiste la realt� stessa di Dio.

This is the key word of her attitude as Christian. To be aware of what we are, of the gift we have been given ('If you would know the gift of God !' said Jesus to the Samaritan woman, John 4.10). To do what? In view of what? To be in communion, to embody the faith, to use the gift received, transforming our own life in every way and bringing about, in the service of God, to the poor, to the city, the synthesis of faith in life, of the Word and the deeds in which is the reality itself of God.

La scomessa suprema del Dio della Bibbia ha infatti a che fare con le vicende umane, pretende di salvare totalmente l'umanit�, non solo nell'al di l�; pretende di imporre alla storia costruita quaggi� dagli uomini e dai popoli - intrisa di prepotenza e di sangue - un corso nuovo, di giustizia, fraternit� e pace cui Dio chiama l'uomo a collaborare: " Venga il tuo Regno, come in cielo cos� in terra ".

The supreme trust in the God of the Bible has, indeed, to do with human happenings, he wants to save humanity totally, not only in teh other world; he wants to give to history shaped here by individuals and peoples - soaked with tyranny and blood - a new course, of justice, fraternity and peace in which God calls us to collaborate: " Your kingdom come, on earth as in heaven".

Fioretta era consapevole che il Dio della Bibbia pretende dunque che la sua Parola eterna sia posta come basamento, costruttiva di civilt�, perch� una cultura degna dell'uomo nasce dalle fede e non viceversa: " Se il Signore non costruisce la casa, invano si affaticano i costruttori! "

Fioretta was aware that the God of the Bible sets forth therefore that his eternal Word be placed as foundation, constructed with civility, because a culture worthy of humanity is born in faith and not otherwise: 'If the Lord does not build the house, the workers work in vain ".

Saggio dunque chi, come lei, si lascia istruire dal Signore! Fioretta ha speso la sua vita per affermare una nozioncultura non esclusivamente libresca, ma esistenziale, capace di lasciare un'impronta fattiva di amicizia, bellezza, armonia e pace nelle sue manifestazioni concrete.

Wise is that one who, like her, allows the self to be taught by the Lord! Fioretta spent her life affirming a learning that was not only bookish, but existential, capable of spontaneous friendship, beauty, harmony and peace in its concrete manifestations.

Un'esperienza vitale dunque che Fioretta realizzava a partire dalla Messa dei poveri di S. Procolo, perch� nell'Eucaristia (il corpo e sangue di Cristo) come nella vicinanza e nell'aiuto ai poveri (in cui si rende manifesta la presenza di Cristo "L'avete fatto a me! " Mt. 25,40) si realizza la sintesi tra fede e vita, tra Parola e fatto.

A vital experience then which Fioretta achieved with the Mass of the Poor at San Procolo, because in the Eucharist (the body and blood of Christ), as in the closeness and in the helping the poor (in which is the presence of Christ, ' You have done it to me" Matthew 25.40), is achieved the synthesis between belief and life, between Word and deed.

Pochi anni prima di morire, il 15 aprile del' 91 scriveva:

A few years before she died, she wrote, 15 April 1991:

" Roma. Dagli zii. Tempo per riordinare un istante le idee. La vera strada della preghiera � sempre molto semplice a mio avviso ed � ancora e sempre il Vangelo: letto, meditato, vissuto. Da ragazzina ricopiavo il Vangelo per non leggerlo con distrazione. Credo che di nuovo, almeno a volte, dovrei fare cos� per conficcarmelo nuovamente nella testa e nel cuore. Pi� tempo per la riflessione sulla Parola di Dio, pi� ancora che per i Salmi. Farmi penetrare da quel modo di ragionare, di vedere le cose e di agire. E non lasciar passare i giorni senza volto, senza questa sosta costruttiva ".

Rome. At the uncles. Time to reorganize one's ideas. The true way of prayer is always very simple it seems to me and is still and always the Gospel: read, thought, lived. In my girlhood I copied out the Gospel in order to read it without distraction. I think again, at least sometimes, that I ought to do this to fix it anew in my head and in my heart. More time for contemplation on the Word of God, even more than for the Psalms. To make me penetrate into this world of thinking, of seeing things and doing them. And not letting the days pass without meaning, without this constructive pause.

La crisi di valori e di fini del nostro tempo nasce precisamente dall'aver separato la fede dalle scelte fondamentali dell'esistenza personale e collettiva.

The crisis of values and goals in our time is born precisely from having separated faith from the fundamental choice of our personal and communal existence.

Al contrario, i santi, autentici costruttori di civilt� e di futuro, hanno scommesso sull'attendibilit� della Parola di Dio nella vita spirituale e anche temporale. Questa decisione riguarda anche noi.

On the contrary, the saints, true shapers of civilization and of the future, rely on the listening to the Word of God in their spiritual and even temporal life. This decision is the same also for us.
