Musician's Birthdays - Folk Music, Bluegrass and Old-Time Music, Country Blues, Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitarists, etc.
This started out in October 1991just as a simple birthday list for thediscographies I was working on. But as more sources were found, it evolved into a Master Reference and Index for all found musicians and others in the above musical fields.
It contains the name (or professional name and birth name), and if known, birth and death dates, birthplace, place of death and starting page for the references for the artist or group I have found in the listed sources. Not all of the listed book and magazinesources are completely indexed. Included are only those sources which have a special listing, section, discography or biographical sketch for the artist or group, and not for every single occurrence of their name.* If the artist was part of a group, there is a list of all groups they belong(ed) to. For those unfamiliar with them, there is a key to the birthplaceU.S. state codes used by the U.S. Postal Service.
* There is one exception to the above limitation of not including references which may not have a separate section for an artist. Because of the wide scope of their 12 and 16 page indexes, with 3 columns of names per page, if an artist is listed in either of the two editions of "The Folk Music Sourcebook", that source is listed here. See the index in each book for the specific page number reference(s) for the artist.
"Index" = a link to theartist or group's main Index entry.
"[...]" = the reason why an artist appears here, even though they may seem out of place because they normally don't come close to fitting any of the above musical fields. In many cases, eg. B.B. King, Linda Ronstadt, Johnny Winter and others appear here for completeness' sake, because they appear in at least one major Folk Music or Country Blues source. Some non-Folk groups appear because one or more of their members started out in Folk Music, for example, Denny Doherty and John Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas. And lastly, a few appear simply because, 1) they are some of my personal favorite performers, Bill Cosby, Barbra Streisand, Blood Sweat & Tears and others, 2) like Rodgers and Hammerstein or Ira Gershwin, folk musicians have recorded their music, 3) they were born or have lived inWisconsin, 4) they have the same birth or death date as the Webmaster's birth date, or 5) they wereStar Trek "Voyager"cast members.
"...." in the birth date column means this is a group.
"{...}" = the title of the obituary article in"Sing Out!"magazine. Everyone written up in the listed issues is indexed here regardless of their musical field.
**Listing Format:**
artist or group name birth date death date birthplace link to FolkLib Index entry d. death place Note 1: bibliography sources birth (maiden) name aka "also known as", pseudonyms this artist recorded under Note 2: (groups this artist was/is in) Note 2: see ... (artists that were in this group at one time or another) [reason for listing] {"Sing Out!" obituary article title}
Note 1: If a "d." and a place does not appear in a listing immediately below the "death date", I do not know where the artist died.
Note 2: As I have time, to avoid duplication, this information is being moved to the artist or group's main entry, i.e. click on "Index" for a possible list of the past/present members of the group, or groups the artist is/has been in.
