Though an Elf-friend, he was for many years a friend and counsellor to King Ar-Pharazôn. Dismissed by Sauron, he sailed into the West to seek the pardon of the Valar for the misdeeds of the Númenóreans; his fate is unknown. Notes 1 Amandil's actual birthdate is not recorded. The date of approximately II 3029 shown here is an estimate based on a typical Númenórean generation of ninety years, counting back from the birth of Amandil's son Elendil. 2 There are two dates given for Amandil's final journey in volume XII of The History of Middle-earth. The other is II 3310, but the date of II 3316 given here seems to represent Tolkien's final intention. 3 Or 'ama'ndil'. The position of the stress here depends on the interpretation of the 'nd' in Amandil's name: in English, it is a double consonant, and so the stress goes on the second syllable.
