The prophecy foretold many things that later came to pass, especially the evil consequences of the Oath of Fëanor for himself and his Sons. So powerful were Mandos' words that Fëanor's half-brother Finarfin gave up the march, and led his people back to dwell in Valinor. Notes 1 According to the Annals of Aman (in volume X of The History of Middle-earth), the Doom of Mandos took place in the Valian Year 1496. Valian Years were much longer than solar years, so a direct conversion is difficult, but this would place the event very roughly ten years after the Darkening of Valinor, and about thirty-eight years before the first rising of the Moon and Sun.
