He was granted the title of Marshal of the West-mark by King Éomer after the War of the Ring. Notes 1 Tolkien doesn't offer a direct translation of Erkenbrand's name, but it appears to derive from Old English eorcan brand, literally meaning 'precious sword'. The word appears especially in eorcanstán, 'precious stone' (which is the source of the name 'Arkenstone'), so Erkenbrand's name possibly implies 'jewelled sword'. See also...
