The greatest of all hounds in the histories of Middle-earth was Huan the Hound of Valinor, who defeated Sauron in single combat. Notes 1 In Old English, hund was the more common general name for the animal we call a 'dog' today. The word docga originated as a more specific name, applied to certain larger breeds. As the language evolved, the two words exchanged roles, so today we normally use 'dog' as a more general term, and 'hound' only for certain varieties, especially those bred for hunting. See also...
