The Encyclopedia of Arda - Húrin the Tall (original) (raw)
An important officer of the city of Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring, who fought in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. After the death of Denethor, with Faramir incapacitated in the Houses of Healing, and Aragorn not yet proclaimed King, the command of the city fell to Húrin for a short time. After the ultimate defeat of Sauron, Húrin officiated at Aragorn's coronation, and it was he who granted entry to the city for the newly crowned King Elessar.
Though nothing is known for certain of Húrin's descent, his name hints that he was related in some degree to Denethor, Boromir and Faramir. Their house, the House of the Stewards, was descended from Húrin of Emyn Arnen, and there were two other Stewards by the name of Húrin. With so many Húrins in one House, it seems at least plausible that Húrin the Tall represented yet another member of the same line.

| 1 | The original Húrin had been a heroic Lord of Dor-lómin of the First Age, and three of the Stewards of Gondor had also been named Húrin. By the end of the Third Age, then, the name was probably meant to recall the famous Húrins of history, rather than be literally understood as 'vigorous heart'. |
