Thinking himself exiled from Doriath, he had been betrayed to the Orcs, and then unwittingly slain his rescuer and friend Beleg. Thinking these disasters linked to a curse on his name and his family, he sought to conceal his identity from the Elves of Nargothrond, and from the evil of Morgoth. Thus he gave himself a new identity, Agarwaen son of Úmarth, meaning 'Bloodstained' son of 'Ill-fate'. Given his experiences to that time, he must indeed have seen himself as the son of Ill-fate, but worse was to come. By his actions, Nargothrond would fall, and he would unknowingly wed his own sister before ultimately choosing to fall on his sword. See also...
