In Mordor, Sauron used the Fire of Orodruin to forge the Ring of Power, a Ruling Ring intended to give him control over the bearers of all the others of its kind. Sauron's plan largely failed, but the Ring of Power he constructed remained an artefact of extreme potency, bearing much of his own native power. It was thus also a source of great danger to Sauron, and when it was destroyed in the War of the Ring, thousands of years after its making, it brought about the Dark Lord's final downfall.
