| Indexes: Alphabetical: O Alphabetical: S Orcs About this entry: Updated 31 December 2014 Updates planned: 1 Orcs made for warfare A term used especially of the Uruk-hai, a breed of Orc larger and stronger than other kinds, and able to move freely under the light of the Sun. These emerged during the later Third Age, being first seen outside Mordor in about the year III 2475. The term 'soldier-orc' does not seem to have been exclusive to the Uruks, as they were referred to as 'great soldier-orcs',1 implying that there were other lesser kinds who could be given the same name. Indeed, most of the Orcs we know of in the direct service of Mordor or Isengard had some kind of military role, and in that sense almost all known Orcs were 'solder-orcs' of one kind or another.
