In reward for the aid of the Northmen, Cirion granted them the wide green land of Calenardhon to dwell in, and so gave rise to the land of Rohan as a perpetual ally of Gondor. We have only a single brief reference to the Tale, and so we cannot be sure that it refers to the same work as the Chronicle, though this seems the most likely interpretation. Indeed, in its older usage the word 'tale' is practically synonymous with 'chronicle' (as for example in the title of the 'Tale of Years'). Nonetheless, it is not impossible that the Tale was a separate work, describing more of the events leading up to the Oath of Cirion and Eorl that founded Rohan (whereas the Chronicle simply describes their meeting and its outcome).
