The Encyclopedia of Arda - Thurin (original) (raw)

Finduilas’ name for Túrin

When Túrin was led to Nargothrond by Gwindor, he tried to hide from the curse of Morgoth by disguising his identity, calling himself Agarwaen son of Úmarth. The Elves of Nargothrond accepted him, and he came to be honoured among them, often being given the title Adanedhel, 'Elf-Man', or Mormegil, 'Black Sword'.

Finduilas was the daughter of King Orodreth of Nargothrond, and she and Túrin became close to one another. Guessing that Túrin hid some secret in his past, she gave him another new name: Thurin, from the Elvish for 'Secret'. Túrin was startled that she came so close to his true name, but continued to keep the secret of his origins until Gwindor revealed his true identity as Túrin Húrin's son of Dor-lómin.
