Time Exposures: A Photographic Record of the Dinosaur Age Jane Burton & Dougal Dixon (Beaufort 0-8253-0217-X, Nov ’84 [Oct ’84], $14.95, 96pp, hc) Reprint (Sphere 1984 as The Age of Dinosaurs), first U.S. edition. Semi-fiction/art book. These “photographs” produced by combining model dinosaurs with real backgrounds are oddly reminiscent of Patrick Woodruffe’s recent fantasy montages, and don’t really have a photographic feel, so this isn’t the dinosaur lover’s fantasy come true. The smallest beasts are most convincing. (FCM)

The Catalogue of Fantastic Inventions Jacques Carelman (St. Martin’s 0-312-12363-9, Nov ’84 [Oct ’84], $9.95, 126pp, pb) Reprint (U.K. 1984) of the first English translation of a collection of bizarre sculpture/artifacts/drawings by a Frenchman who is keeping the spirit of Dada and surrealism alive. From the “Time Zone Tunic” to the “Rodent-Powered Sewing Machine” and the parodies of Leonardo’s drawings, it combines art, humor, and fantasy.
