Clareson gives summaries of 838 sf books published between 1870 and 1939, including most of the utopian novels of the early years of this century. Despite the title, it includes a number of British books.

Thirtieth printing, with over 2.8 million copies in print. Contains the 1982 afterword by Clarke. It’s strange to see a cover on 2001 which proclaims, “by the author of 2010.”

One of the 1983 top bestsellers (300,000 hardcover copies, 1.75 million first paperback printing). A worthy successor to 2001. Highly recommended. (CNB)

Of Time and Stars Arthur C. Clarke (Gollancz 0-575-03315-0, Feb ’84 [Jan ’84], £5.95, 190pp, hc) Reissue (Gollancz 1972) of the one Clarke collection which has never appeared in a U.S. edition. This one drops the J.B. Priestly introduction but adds a new foreword by Clarke and an updated bibliography. All 18 stories have appeared in other collections.


Profiles of the Future Arthur C. Clarke (Holt Rinehart & Winston 0-03-069783-2, Apr ’84 [Mar ’84], $15.95, 255pp, hc) Non-fiction, associational. This is a revised version of a 1963 collection of articles not so much predicting the future as outlining the possibilities. As with most of Clarke’s work, it is technologically oriented, with a touch of mysticism. Fascinating reading and a primer for sf authors. (CNB)


Rendezvous with Rama Arthur C. Clarke (Ballantine Del Rey 0-345-31560-X, Feb ’84 [Jan ’84], $2.95, 274pp, pb) [Rama] Reissue (Gollancz 1973) sf novel; 14th printing, one million copies now in print. This is Clarke at his finest, and is one of my two personal favorites of his. Highly recommended. (CNB)
