OKHighways - U.S. 62 (original) (raw)

Highway History: Since 1950, U.S. 62 has had the same general route. However, in the past 56 years, much of U.S. 62 has been four-laned, especially the sections from Altus to Lawton, Anadarko to Chickasha, Blanchard to Newcastle, and Muskogee to Tahlequah. The highway has also been rerouted onto Interstates 44, 240, and 35 through Oklahoma City. It has also been rerouted to bypass the downtown areas of Lawton, Muskogee, and Tahlequah.

Highway Review: U.S. 62 is an unusual highway. It starts in El Paso, Texas, at the Mexican border, and goes all the way to Niagara Falls, New York. It is signed east-west until Kentucky, then it heads north the rest of the way. It travels through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.

In Oklahoma U.S. 62 begins five miles west of Hollis. It runs east-west until Lawton, then it joins Interstate 44 and starts heading north for a few miles before exiting off. From OK 6 to Lawton, U.S. 62 is four lanes, much of it with a 70 mph speed limit. After departing Interstate 44, U.S. 62 (co-signed with U.S. 281) travels mostly due north to OK 9 west of Anadarko, where the highway sheds U.S. 281. U.S. 62 and OK 9 then duplex until the H.E. Bailey Turnpike Spur between Blanchard and Newcastle. North of Newcastle, U.S. 62 again joins Interstate 44 East and they head into Oklahoma City. U.S. 62 then heads east on Interstate 240 between Interstate 44 and Interstate 35, then U.S. 62 goes north with Interstate 35 for about 10 miles before U.S. 62 heads east. The highway runs parallel to Interstate 40 from Oklahoma City to Henryetta, where U.S. 62 heads north with U.S. 75 for 12 miles before U.S. 62 starts heading east towards Muskogee. At this point the highway begins distancing itself from Interstate 40 and finds its last major town in Tahlequah. Mainline U.S. 62 bypasses downtown Tahlequah to its south and east. Slightly less than 30 miles east of Tahlequah, during which U.S. 62 goes through a scenic winding section between Tahlequah and U.S. 59, the highway enters Arkansas, and Fayetteville is just a few miles away.
