Jay Ambler wrote: Following being cut by the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, Ron Simmons played football for the now defunct United States Football League (USFL) with the Tampa Bay Bandits (1984) and Memphis Showboats (1985)teams. It was while playing for the Bandits that he became good friends with fellow teammate Lex Luger and future Dallas Cowboys standout Nate Newton.

After he was trained by the legendary Hiro Matsuda, who also trained Luger and Paul Orndorf, among others; Simmons debut came in Eddie Graham’s Championship Wrestling (CWF) from Florida promotion. He was considered a babyface often pairing with Luger, Barry Windham or Mike Graham.

At the time CWF had peaked and the talent stable was saturated. Simmons left shortly after a run in CWF and found greener pastures in the NWA and WWF/WWE.
