History in a Pecan Shell

A man named Fraser opened a station for freighters here in the late 1870s. Think of it as an early form of truck stop. The station was named after his daughter.

When the Texas and Pacific Railway bypassed his station - he did what many small towns had done - he moved to the rails in order to increase his business.

He opened a store and a community soon developed - taking the name that Fraser had been using. A post office was granted in 1876 - but closed by 1907.

In the 1890s, Annetta was a shipping point for cotton and had a school and at least 25 citizens. It never developed into a city - prefering to remain what the Handbook of Texas calls a "school and church community."

The population stayed under 50 people until growth took off in the 1970s.

The original Annetta Community was not incorporated, until the late 1970's when concerned citizens made an effort to incorporate the Annetta area as three towns: Annetta, Annetta North, and Annetta South. The latter two did not "split away" from the original Annetta, but rather, were incorporated simultaneously. All three Annettas were incorporated in August of 1979.

Another note: The area now covered by the Annettas includes much more than the original Annetta community. I have a map of Annetta in the 1930's drawn by Homer Norris, who grew up in Annetta (and still lives there). This map shows that the Annetta community included the area along FM 5 south of the railroad tracks, and also Center Point Road, Airport Road, Old Annetta Road, and Duncan Road. This area is now incorporated in central Annetta North, and northern Annetta.
