History in a Pecan Shell

The town began life as Clay Station on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad in the 1880s and was named after landowner A. Clay.

The post office opened two years later. In 1903 storekeeper W. A. Lyon opened his general store and by 1911 a school was in operation. It later consolidated with the Snook ISD in 1949.

Clay had 150 people in 1925 but twenty years later it was down to 100. In the 60s the post office was discontinued and the town declined to 61 - the same figure they've been using since 1970.
