This is NOT the Garfield on Highway 71. This one is a little more out-of-the-way. When you get to Cotton Patch you'll be close.

Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth would've loved to have painted the Garfield Community Building. "Andy, can I borrow some burnt umber? I left mine in Saltillo." "Well, go back and get it, Ed!" (Watercolorists are known to be a sarcastic bunch).

The generous rainfall this year (2001) has given Karnes Countians a lot to be thankful for. They had their first cutting of hay in May, the cattle are happy, and ponds are full. Corn is approaching six feet - without irrigation.

Life is also a little easier for the barn swallows or chimney swifts. There's plenty of nest-building mud to be had. These quick little birds can be observed from Uvalde underpasses to Bastrop bridges. Here in Garfield they are undisturbed by highway traffic and their shrill cries are heard without competitive noises.

Garfield doesn't look like it would benefit from an influx of birders, but it's certainly a good place for observing the birds and their nesting habits. There are hundreds of nests along the eaves of the building. Bring fast film.
