Muellersville, Texas, Washington County. (original) (raw)

History in a Pecan Shell
This tiny community remains centered around the old store which is still intact after closed in the 1980s. It has also retained the same population for the last 69 years (40 residents).
Muellersville was named after William Mueller (1870-1911) who was the Texas-born son of German immigrant parents. A post office was in operation before the Civil War and in the early 1900s, William Mueller was the owner of the community store.
The post office closed in 1905 but mail was routed from Brenham. Muellersville, with the nearby towns of Bleiblerville and Welcome formed a co-op gin in the early 1920s which continued to operate even as fewer and fewer farmers planted cotton. It finally closed in the 1960s. Today the area is awash in a sea of cattle pastures.
Proximity to Brenham stunted growth and in the early 1930s the population was a mere 25. The 1950 census counted 40 people where it has remained ever since.
The town is identified by two things: the naming of a street in the community and the most notable landmark: the old Muellersville store and gas station shown above.
