History in a Pecan Shell
Originally called Plum Grove, it is the second oldest established community in
Fayette County, having been settled as early land grants to Andrew Castleman in 1828 and John Cooke in 1831. Original settlers were Tennesseans. The Plum Baptist Church was the first Baptist church in Texas west of the Colorado River.
In 1880 a post office was established, and by 1900 the community was thriving with every essential business and even its own doctor. By 1950 the population had grown to 280. By the 1980s the population had declined to less than 100 but the town still retained its post office. The former town center remains, allthough the post office has moved in recent years to a non-descript modular box on the highway.
