History
Located in the north central region of Bexar County, Balcones Heights can be found at the intersection of Interstate Highways 10 and 410, San Antonio surrounds the town in the same manner that Vatican City resides inside Rome.
Settlement in the area began during the Great Depression when the government started advertising the land as a cheap way for middle-class families to have a home of their own. The community continied to grow at slow pace during the 1940s. When the city of San Antonio threatened to annex the area, the residents banded together and incorporated the town in 1948. The only problem was finding a good way to get funds for running the place. The local government and its 376 citizens had to rely upon traffic fines until the addition of the aforementioned interstate highways. Business and revenue started pouring in. By 1970, the population had increased to 2,504. The biggest economic boost came with the addition of an indoor shopping mall on Frederickburg Road. The first one built in Bexar County, Wonderland Shopping City later had its name changed to Wonderland of the Americas. The mall continues to help Balcones Heights, which currently has a population of 3,286.
