History in a Pecan Shell
Texas Lt. Governor Fletcher S. Stockdale is the town�s namesake. Established during the Civil War in 1863, it wasn�t until 1871 when the town was granted a post office.
An influx of Polish and German immigrants in the early 1880s bolstered the population which reached 300 by the middle of that decade.
It wasn�t until 1898 when the San Antonio and Gulf Railroad arrived. The estimated population of 1914 was 900, breaking the 1,000 mark at the end of the 1920s.
The Great Depression reduced the population by about one third. From the mid 1960s with a population of 1,100, Stockdale has slowly increased to nearly 1,400 by the 2000 Census.

It was neat to see the little jail off main street. Ran into the city manager next door who confirmed it being the city jail & said they didn't have any idea to a date on it's origin. He said some restoration was already in the planning stages, including picking the lock as the key was lost several decades ago. - William Beauchamp, June 14, 2009
