Sugarloaf Bridge, Milam County Texas historic bridge

I have visited your [magazine] on a number of occasions. I live in Houston, and I recently viewed your article on the Bryant Station Bridge. My fiance and I decided to drive up to the Buckholts area and have a look at it. I used Google Earth to check the exact location of the bridge on the Little River, and I discovered that you could make out the shadows of the metal truss.

Before we left, I traced the Little River on Google Earth for more bridges, and I discovered another metal truss bridge, or at least what I suspected was a metal truss bridge, that crossed the Little River in Milam County, approximately 40 miles from the Bryant Station location. This bridge is located approximately 4 miles north of Gause on County Road 264. The exact location is about mile north of Gause on Farm to Market Road 2095, then north on County Road 264 approximately two miles. The road then crosses the Little River. Much to my surprise when I drove the road for the first time, the bridge is an old metal truss bridge, and it has been completely restored by TxDot. The restoration was done in 2006. The bridge is closed for motor traffic, but open for pedestrians.

It has been repainted, and apparently, the pylons that support it have been reformed. There is a new concrete bridge that runs next to it for regular traffic. I have included several pictures, and a photo of the Historical marker that tells the bridge history.

It appears that the bridge is 234 feet in length, and it originally spanned the Brazos River. It was moved to the present location in 1937 when the old bridge collapsed. Then it was restored in 2006. I have not seen the bridge on any maps, and I did not see it on your website. I thought it might be of interest to your readership. - Joe Williams, Houston, Texas, October 07, 2007
