History in a Pecan Shell
Hermann Fischer is the town's namesake. Settled in the early 1850s, the town had originally been called Fischer's Store. The log trading post served the settlers between Blanco and New Braunfels along the mountain ridge that is known as the Devil's Backbone.
A post office was granted in 1876 and in 1888 the Fischer Store School replaced an earlier school called Potters Creek. Fischer's Store became Fischer Store in 1894 at the request of the postal authorities. In 1950 it was officially shortened to simply Fischer, Texas.
For most of the 20th century Fischer had a population of just 40 but with the establishment of Canyon Lake, the population declined to a mere 20.
The population has been estimated at 20 from the late 60s to 2000.
