Expression and Meaning: The Marine Paintings of John Marin contains an essay by Sam Hunter and a Preface by Timothy A. Eaton. 80 pages: 30 color plates, 5 black and white illustrations. Eaton Fine Art says of the catalogue: "Professor Sam Hunter's insightful essay reviews John Marin's career with a keen focus on the importance and originality of his marine paintings. Marin was an American iconoclast whose reputation as one of the century's most important painters is firmly established. The sea and its coastal environment occupied the largest portion of his oeuvre, and this monograph is the first book on Marin dedicated to this singular subject. Dr. Hunter's retrospective analysis examines the symbolically laden and expressively rich marine paintings with fresh understanding informed by the waning days of the century that Marin's art helped to define."(right: catalogue front cover)
About Eaton Fine Art
Eaton Fine Art was founded in 1995 by Timothy Andrew Eaton. Mr. Eaton is the former chief curator of the Boca Raton Museum of Art and the principal of Eaton/Shoen Gallery in San Francisco. Eaton Fine Art's facility includes a renovated historic Art Moderne building at 435 Gardenia Street, a north gallery addition and a contiguous sculpture garden at 419 Gardenia Street designed by Mary Anna Eaton. In the sculpture garden the gallery presents changing exhibitions and installations on the grounds and around its pavilion.
