James Roderick Sinclair, 19th Earl of Caithness was born on 29 September 1906 at Hempsted, Gloucestershire, England.1,2 He was the son of Rev. Hon. Charles Augustus Sinclair and Mary Ann Harman.3 He married, firstly, Grizel Margaret Miller-Cunningham, daughter of Sir George Miller-Cunningham, on 29 April 1933.1 He married, secondly, Madeleine Gabrielle de Pury, daughter of Herman Edward de Pury and Margaret Gwyn Jeffreys, on 17 August 1946.3 He died on 9 May 1965 at age 58 at Blamoral, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.2
He was educated at Marlborough College, Marlborough, Wiltshire, EnglandG.1 He fought in the Second World War.1 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.)1 He was awarded the Chevalier, Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur.1 He was awarded the Croix de Guerre avec palme, Belgian.1 He was appointed Commander, Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.)1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.)1 He succeeded as the 19th Earl of Caithness [S., 1455] on 25 March 1947.1 He succeeded as the 14th Baronet Sinclair, of Canisbay, co. Madeleine Gabrielle de Pury was born on 14 May 1912 at Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England.2 She was the daughter of Herman Edward de Pury and Margaret Gwyn Jeffreys.1,2 She married, firstly, Captain George Wareing Drewery Ormerod, son of Lt.-Col. George Milner Ormerod and Mildred Grace Ottley, in 1941 at Wantage, Berkshire, England.1,2 She married, secondly, James Roderick Sinclair, 19th Earl of Caithness, son of Rev. Hon. Charles Augustus Sinclair and Mary Ann Harman, on 17 August 1946.1 She married, thirdly, David Frederick Ewen in 1977.1 She died in October 1990 at age 78.1
Madeleine Gabrielle de Pury usually went by her middle name of Gabrielle.1 From 1941, her married name became Ormerod.1 Her married name became Sinclair. After her marriage, Madeleine Gabrielle de Pury was styled as Countess of Caithness on 25 March 1947. From 1977, her married name became Ewen.1
