| In a 2012 Phd by publication, based on a book from 2010, I found a chapter where the author claims to have found some literary references (or sampling) in the literary work of someone else. However, an internet essay, published in 2005 on a forum and updated in 2006 and 2009, has exactly the same findings. But this was published by a mere 'fan' of the work, not by an academic or a scholar.In 2010 the author claimed there was no problem because he was unaware when he wrote the book that somebody else had researched the same topic 5 years before him. In 2012, for the Phd, he simply ignored it (as the existence of the 2005 essay was several times mentioned to him after the publication of the book).While there is perhaps no 'plagiarism' as such, shouldn't the doctor have mentioned, out of shere politeness and honesty, that somebody else had already come to the same conclusion?Tags:plagiarism-and-cheating Following on from a recent thread on this comm, I wonder what you lovely people do to check for plagiarism. I mark students' work, and I'll be doing more of it now that I'm studying for a teaching qualification. A year from now, if all goes to plan I'll add AFHEA to the alphabet soup after my name. I already teach undergrads and Masters students; soon I'll be teaching A levels too.My University requires everything that's electronic to go through Turnitin. So far, that app hasn't spotted any plagiarism in the work I've marked. I once spotted a possible case - an essay that changed styles halfway through - and reported it. The buck didn't stop with me, at that time, but in the future it will stop with me. Marks have not been distributed yet for the projects. It's the end of the year and I'm not sure whether this is worth reporting to the professor because I am not sure if he'll even take action on it, especially since this is her last semester for her BA and since the course is a degree requirement her, failing the course or other disciplinary action may prevent her from graduating.Is it worth approaching the professor? Thanks in advance!Tags:ask the a_a reference desk, grading, plagiarism-and-cheating Sometimes students plagiarise from the internet, by getting original source material and just altering the sentences and phrases a little bit, and passing the work off as their own. If they've given a proper reference, then the academic (e.g. someone marking a paper) could look at the original source, and conclude that they've done this. Then, depending on the situation, the appropriate action can be taken. (This might just be explaining to the student that they've haven't used the original source material properly ... we're talking here about students who have referenced their material, and they may be making mistakes if it's their first time doing this type of assignment.)The language of instruction in most univerisites and colleges in the US and the UK is English. Sometimes you do have international students who are fluent in another language. If they then use source material in their own language, how does the acaemic know they are not plagiarising? How do they know they are referencing the material correctly, at all?What are the policies to cover this? It's not reasonable to expect there to be easy access to people fluent in all different languages at a university, but if you say only original sources which were written in English are allowed, isn't this also very wrong and 'English-centric'?(The case where a student just uses a foreign source and plagiarises without any referencing by translating into English, is obviously just normal plagiarising, but very much harder to detect.)Tags:plagiarism-and-cheating I'm a first-year doctoral student, and I have a question about self-plagiarism.While reading an assigned monograph for class, I came across a section of text which seemed incredibly familiar. I knew I hadn't read the book before, and it was the words and cadence of phrases themselves that were familiar, not just the general argument. To make a long story short, I eventually found that fully two pages in this chapter (nearly at the end of the book) were word-for-word the same as two pages of the introduction, which I had read three hours prior. It wasn't identified in any way as being previously-used material.Continuing to read, I noticed several more occurrences of repeated text, although these were all much smaller (only paragraphs), which generally went along the lines of, "In Chapter 2 I demonstrated that....[insert word-for-word paragraph from Conclusion of Chapter 2]." These instances were not in quotes or footnoted.I was under the impression that using material word-for-word without citing your source is plagiarism even if you wrote the material yourself. Am I wrong? Are there nuances I'm overlooking - maybe since the material was all contained in the same work, it's not the same as if it had been pulled from another work? Anticipating the suggestion, I would ask my professor, but I don't feel entirely comfortable because he has a certain relationship with the author - I don't want to be seen as attacking the author (and I don't have any desire to attack the author). The ethical issue I'm faced with is what to do with the author. The individual, beyond handing us something completely different from what was indicated in the abstract, gave us a recycled paper. It was nothing more than a rehashing of others' works - there was no real attempt to hide that, and there were even references to at least one of the papers used.Personally, I would love to run this individual up a pole and announce the fraud to the world. But I know that would make me no better than the author. I know I don't have the intestinal fortitude to deal with writing anything to this person that doesn't include at least a few profane words. Does anyone have a form letter or an old letter that would cover this issue? I have ones for undergrad students, but they are just too "nice." I found out that our institution does indeed use "turnitin" and I signed up and sent through their papers. Both students plagiarized more than I thought. One was 61% and the other was 31%. One of the students said they accidentally turned in a very rough draft and not the final paper. It was emailed, so its more possible than if it was printed out, but still I doubt it.I find the program fascinating, it shows each and every part plagiarized and the source. These were largely different websites. It only takes a second, I highly suggest it to everyone. I will use it on all future papers. I may also scan my own work through just to see if I made any crazy mistakes or anything. One of the students wants to meet with me to turn in the "correct" version that is the final copy they say they meant to turn in. A big part of me wants to accept this, I also want the student to learn what exactly plagiarism is and not to do it. When I am reading a paper and it suddenly becomes good I instantly cut and paste a sentence or two into google and so a search and yep, again and again I find that students just copied it from some place. If they were just making a mistake, it might be one of their references they cite. If they were being devious, they put some random citation after it that has no connection to the original source. Should they just get a zero for the assignment, a Fail for the entire class when the paper is only 10% of it, or should they get expelled from the entire program/school? I am a bleeding heart and leading towards telling them its expulsion and letting them sweat it out for a few days before telling them its just a zero for the assignment. I am also becoming so cynical that if it's a good paper, I am starting to just assume I can't find the source of the plagiarism. I guess there is a new system at our library where you can run a paper through and it can tell you what percentage is plagiarized. I am just going to automatically do this with all papers rather than spend all of the time doing google searches.Do the rest of you increasingly find lots of plagiarism in our digital age? Not only do I warn them over and over about this, but its even covered in one of our text books as a problem of globalization and increased internet usage! The discrepancy between this student's spoken English (she is not a native speaker) and the writing in her paper is simply too great. Furthermore, the sophistication of the writing and the terminology used indicates graduate work at least, if not published text. I'm not buying it. The thing is, how do I prove it? I tried googling a few sentences from the paper to see if anything obvious came up, but no. Any other suggestions?EDIT: I think I've over-emphasized the ESL issue here. My suspicion is not based on the English language per se as much as it is on the technical sophistication of her paper. More details: I teach psychology. The paper was a comparison of operant and classical conditioning. She refers to theorists and movements that were not introduced in the textbook -- and this was just supposed to be a 1-page writing assignment on 2 major concepts from the chapter. It's possible that her level of knowledge really is that sophisticated. For all I know she has a Ph.D. in Psychology from Poland. Back in undergrad (engineering school) I had a habit of finding old copies of my profs' exams, knowing that they tended to cut as many corners as I did, and there was a high probability that I would see a similar test when it was my turn. I never thought this was unethical-- working through the old tests just seemed like a good idea for studying, if nothing else. Anyways, I'm informed by a friend of mine that what I did was wrong, but I'm unconvinced. This doesn't matter, as I no longer have to take tests that I could possibly cheat on. (Unless you think those code-for-hire guys could bang out a qualifier for under a hundred bucks?) It's a "dissertation writing" outfit. Now scroll down in their FAQ to where it provides "endorsements." Search google for "Adrian J. Seath". Notice the dozen other scam sites? Same people, obviously. Of particular interest is this variation, a college entrance essay scam site, with completely different fake endorsement quotes attributed to the same two names. In that one, the scammer claims some credentials for him/herself: "I am a PhD Professor and have a lot of “writing college-entrance-essays” experience, as I am a senior faculty member at Rochville University." A quick search for Rochville University reveals this, among other gems.Are there people out there who are both (a) dishonest enough to try this, AND (b) so blitheringly stupid that they can't even take 30 seconds to find out that they're giving money to thieves?(Incidentally, I wonder if defamation suits will be forthcoming from any of the people whose names were attached to fake endorsements?)Edit: I probably ought to cite my source for the original link to the first site. ;-)Tags:plagiarism-and-cheating I wrote to my three plagiarizing students (all graduate performance majors) asking them to send me a list of sources they used for their papers. The two guys whose papers were virtually identical (the phrase "blissfully ingenuous rounded binary" kind of leaps out at you, though I didn't find a url for it) haven't written back yet, but here's what I got from the third student:"I only referred one web site for introduction. The URL is [...]. The rest of my write-up is all my idea and Georgina, a friend of mine, hepled me to edit it."My response:"Your introduction is also very similar to this website: [...]. You will need to rewrite your introduction in your own words and provide citations in order to receive a passing grade for the paper. I took some of it for when I met with the student today and here is what happened. I was wrong about who the English teacher is. It's not his mother, but his girlfriend's mother. I praised the paper as being vastly improved and asked him how such a thing could happen so quickly. He kind of laughed and said that his girlfriend's mother helped him write it. So, getting an admissin was a piece of cake, mostly because I don't think he realized that that was not okay! I asked how much of it she "helped" him with and he admitted to coming up with an outline and the girlfriend's mom did the writing. I very calmly informed him that this was not okay and the paper was getting an F with no option to rewrite it. I explained to him the million and one reasons why plagiarism is wrong and he kind of just sat there nodding his head. Then, I let him go and class resumed.Now, the problem is this: This woman who wrote the paper is a substitute English teacher for the school district. My teaching position is unique. I teach dual credit English for a community college. So, I am not technically a part of the school district even though I go to this high school twice a week to teach. I've told everything to my supervisor at the community college, but it just rankles that there are people like this woman out there who are making all teachers look bad by pulling this. The evidence that he did not write it is overwhelming. This is upper level college work but my student is a high school senior who can barely write or speak in coherent sentences. He's never gotten anything higher than a C/D on an assignment and generally does not care about class. He consistantly bombs tests and quizes because he isn't capable of in depth analysis. The biggest problem is that he can't produce any secondary source material that he used to write this paper (they had to have two outside sources). I *know* he did not write it, but I can't find any evidence to the contrary. I have looked up nearly every sentence of the paper online and I can't find anything. This leads me to believe that he paid someone to write it for him. I also know his mother is an English teacher, but how could a parent write a paper for their kid? I'm really at a loss as to what to do... Can I ethically accuse this student of plagiarism if I have no tangible proof? Any advice would be most welcome. I was looking over some of their papers on the trip to Dallas and started thinking hmm, this student can barely string two sentences together in e-mail, yet her paper contains finely crafted prose. When I got home, I googled some of her sentences and found at least two websites she literally copied and pasted text from. Oops. What's even worse is that another student used the same sentences, so it wasn't rocket science to figure this out. I know foreign students come from different backgrounds, but I let them know in no uncertain terms that this is entirely unacceptable. I contacted the graduate advisor, who suggested I turn it into a pedagogical opportunity about proper citation of sources. Once I give him a name, he has to file a formal grievance with the dean, and things could get ugly. Instead I'll return their papers and ask them to cite sources and reword any text they get from elsewhere.What's really bad is that this was an *analytical* paper, so there was no need to use *any* outside sources.
