| Hello everyone -- long time lurker and first time poster here. I read through the community information and checked out the links posted there to be sure my question would be appropriate. I'm not entirely sure that it is, but I don't think it's inappropriate either. In any case, if this question is not appropriate for this community, please let me know and I will try to take it elsewhere -- this is pretty much the only community I'm a member of that deals with this sort of topic.Anyway, to my question. I have a BA in psychology, and am four years out of college. I got my degree in hopes of becoming some sort of social services type person. I worked for a couple years as a crisis counselor, working with adults with mental illnesses, and then for a few months as a home-based counselor working with children. After spending a few years in that area, I've become a bit jaded to that field of non-profit (when it comes to pay, I've dealt with not getting my promised bonus on account of the agency president needing his bonus first, and also with not getting a paycheck at all, when one was definitely owed me. Also, I can't stand people who work in that field because they want to take advantage of others). More and more recently, I'm feeling my calling may be a bit more activist type. I'm extremely passionate about a lot of women's rights issues, as well as having a ridiculously strong desire to work for the HRC someday. To a lesser degree, I'm also interested in getting into sexual and reproductive health education. Clearly, I have a lot of interests, and as far as determining where I'll end up, I'll probably seek out a career counselor. At this point though, I really want to start looking into Master's programs so that I can begin centering my focus. My problem, however, is that I have no idea what sort of Master's program I would need (which may partly be due to the fact that I have so many interests). Surely something that covers politics and social policies, but beyond that, I have no idea. Because I'm out of college, I can't ask an advisor or pop down to my career office. That being said, I apologize if this question is totally outside the realm of discussions that are supposed to take place. Like I said, just point me in the right direction, and I'll post this question elsewhere. Other than that, I'd be grateful for any suggestions or words of advice you all have to offer. When you've taught intro. classes, do you find it more helpful to have students read single authored intro textbooks or edited collection/readers? Generally, I present the overarching theories/ideas and use course texts to illustrate those ideas (i.e. readings apply theory) or the course texts support the theory/idea (i.e. canonical articles). I've always used a reader since it provides varied perspectives/topics and students can get a taste of trunicated canonical texts. However, single authored textbooks are kinda "easy" in that there's more coherence and flow, and I think students gravitate to them more. I now have half of one team telling me they can't get in touch with the rest of their teammates. My students are all adults with full lives and jobs. My first instinct is to reply, "handle your problem yourself," because I feel e-mailing me to tattle is a bit juvenile. But this is also part of a larger pattern of most of these students needing a lot of hand-holding and direction, and I don't want to seem unconcerned. BTW, this is a for-profit institution, so the rules of engagement are different in many ways from those of a traditional university. Since some of you here have presumably been letter writers, and most of you letter receivers, how does this go?In particular, one of my writers is super famous (and so, presumably, has flocks of people clamoring for her time) but has been totally supportive of me for, like, 4 years. She's revised her letter whenever I've needed to use it again, and all this after only taking one seminar with her. I was recently diagnosed with various forms of schizophrenia (long history of symptoms) and I have to take a year off from college. I would have been a junior art history major. I plan on going back but my compulsion to learning REAL HARD is still there. My main interests are art history 1900-present, beat poetry/literature, philosophy 1900-present, and anthropology of South America, Oceania, and Africa, especially as related to the changes the indigenous culture has gone through with modern influences. I'm probably taking online courses in the spring. The question is, where can I find good resources to "unschool" myself in these and ANY other subjects? (The difference, to oversimplify, is that rather than working for say 36 hours in the major, the students work for 11 or 12 courses instead, with the advantage of being therefore limited to taking four courses a semester instead of five; this allows for deeper, "enriched" coursework, which encourages us all to revamp and enhance assignments and definitions of what "course" really means.) We're still in the gathering-data mode, but the plan is to implement the new approach within the next year. Concurrently with that effort, and initially separately from that effort, I began to assemble notes and plans for a first-year English online handbook, which I envisioned as a combination of standard "handbook" (how tos, the idea of process writing, the emphasis on inquiry rather than formula, grammar, and so forth) and a "how university is different from high school, specifically how THIS university is unique in its expectations of first year writing, what you need to know as a freshman, etc" explanation. When I mentioned this project to the Dean overseeing the first year student experience, he jumped on the idea immediately as an opportunity to present our incoming freshmen with a unified online document introducing them to the intellectual rigor of the university experience, one evinced specifically in the now-higher expectations of critical and analytical writing. I thought combining the two aims like this was a good idea. I still do. I'm not sure how to accomplish it, though, even given that the Dean in question is certainly going to be contributing to the effort and not planning to leave it all up to me as the director of the freshman comp program. He has no idea either how to combine the two, but it seems clear to both of us that if we did it separately, we'd end up overlapping in several ways; it appears more effective to simply produce a two-pronged single effort since critical inquiry in the form of written work is going to be the cornerstone of our new curricular goals. So, I've found a dozen or so models of the handbook idea, one or two models of the "intro to college level inquiry" idea, and no models for the combination of the two. My questions, then, are several, in order to prevent wheel-reinventing: are you aware of other strong "intro to college level critical inquiry" handbooks online? (Links, please!) am I thinking too broadly or too narrowly about the value of such a combined endeavor? This community embraces a very wide range of specialties, and I'd appreciate comments and responses from specific disciplines about whether and how such a handbook would help the students of your experience. what would you recommend that such online handbooks include, other than what I've listed? What kind of material, in your eyes, would help students acclimate to the expectations of a pretty demanding curriculum? (We're a high-ranked private liberal arts college, with recognized schools of business and music as well.) Recommended readings for students? Models of successful writing in the first year? Theory and/or pedagogical approaches to student writing? Aristotelian or Platonic rhetoric? I'd welcome other thoughts, too. Right now I'm focused on seeing trees in relationship to forests, with the result that I'm probably not seeing either too terribly clearly. I know my own trees very well, but I'm less sure about what else might be living in the underbrush with the freshman comp course. Am I, for instance, not seeing the obvious? Very likely. Examples might be: a lost golden age or fall from grace/paradise, an anticipated return to paradise, a looming apocalypse or purgation of evil, a royal child hidden in low estate, etc. These are all coming to mind from the Christian metanarrative and are all known outside of Christianity. Please note that I'm not asking for archetypal roles but rather for archetypal situations, pieces of stories that are believed to affect us on a deep, intuitive level. ETA: Related work on folklore motifs would be helpful to the extent that it includes some sort of screening for those that have especially powerful, relatively universal claims on the human psyche.Thanks!Tags:recommendations I'm looking for a word or phrase to describe a model. Suppose we have a trait "T" that we want to understand better, and we create a model that shows that at a low level of a trait, certain phenomena (such as "a" and "b") are associated with it, and at a high level, different phenomena are associated with it (such as "z"). I'm looking for a word that I can use to describe the relationship between a, b, z, and T. One thing I could say is that I can rank-order a, b, and z in terms of their relationship with T, producing a "model that displays rank-ordering of factors associated with a continous variable." That's clunkier than I'd like, and I'd prefer a simple phrase gets the whole gist of it. However, "hierarchical model" is not the phrase I want, even though z implies higher levels of T than a or b, because "hierarchical model" is already used to refer to a model of nested class relationships.Does anyone know what it is I'm trying to say? :)Tags:recommendations Dear Friends and Colleagues:Do you know or use the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics in any or all of its three editions (1965, 1974, 1993)? More are always welcome.**Tags:recommendations, stress I'm writing a recommendation letter for a student who's both very talented and a stellar human being. The recommendation is for a study-abroad program, and one of the things they'd like me to address is the student's maturity and likelihood of unproblematic adaptation to living abroad. It so happens that this particular student was recently (a few months ago) in a serious car accident and has been dealing with some medical repercussions from that (the student will eventually reach full recovery but not for a few more months and a few more procedures). And dealing exceedingly well, to the eyes of any outside observer: the student is unfailingly optimistic, doesn't make a big deal of their problems, doesn't ask for special treatment, hasn't let it influence their schoolwork (at least in my class). Since specifics always help in recommendation letters, I am considering mentioning this as evidence of the student's outstanding maturity level and ability to adapt well to complex circumstances. I will ask the student first. However, even if the student is okay with me mentioning this, I am wondering whether there might be unintended negative side effects from such a statement. One of my freshmen is looking to transfer to a different school and asked me for a recommendation letter, which I agreed to. But now I'm wondering if my giving her a letter would be useless to her when the admissions committee is reviewing her file. Yes, I'm her instructor, and I designed and taught the class myself, but I'm still just a graduate student. I'm wondering if I should recommend that she find someone else to write her a letter, but offer if no one else steps up. It's getting late in the semester and I don't want to leave her with nothing, but I'm wondering if my letter would really help her.Any advice? I graduated from undergrad in 98, and have wanted to go back to grad school but circumstances have not yet permitted it. I did, however, get to take one class last semester. I was hoping for a chance to prove myself, strengthen my application, and get a good recommendation (since it's been a few years since my undergrad work I'm not in touch with many people there), so that I can get in this fall. The plan didn't work quite as well as I'd hoped. I took a class at one of the best schools, in a program I'm no where near qualified to be in. I really enjoyed the class, and I think I held my own, but I didn't get the grade I'd hoped for. First of all, they threw me for a loop by having only three grades H (High), P (Pass), L (Low). Is this pretty common at the graduate level? I got a final grade of a P. I had a P+ on my midterm, and an H- on a presentation, so I must not have done too well on the final, though I thought it was my best work. I have had a problem all along with not being on the same wavelength as the teacher. Still, I held my own in a class that I wasn't even qualified to be taking.The program I'm applying for is much easier to get into and at a school that only offers an MA, whereas the class I was in had both MA and PhD students.So, do I ask the teacher for a recommendation? I just don't know whether she's going to be happy that I made it through a class that was above my level, or if she will compare me to the other students and say I was a the bottom of the class. I have taken two classes with one full Professor and one with the Dean, but most of my classes and interaction is with Assistant Professors. Now, I have to get 3 recommendations for PhD programs. It is to be expected that a recommendation from a full Professor or Dean will be more impressive than one from an Assistant Professor.The full Professor I took classes with really wanted me to do my PhD here, and was even willing to be my advisor. (This program is totally falling apart at the seams and all the other professors say: "Get out of here to somewhere good!" I'm not comfortable at all with the set-up and direction of the program.) I've also heard that this Professor doesn't tend to write recommendations, and if they actually get written (by the grad assistant), they are not very good.I've known one person who asked the Dean for a recommendation and she ended up having to get someone else to write it because the Dean sat on it for so long. And this person took several classes with the Dean, as opposed to my one class. So, I'm leaning towards just getting recommendations from the three assistant professors who have already offered to write recommendations for me, and who would do it promptly, and would give me glowing reviews.But I'm torn, because I don't want to take any chances on my applications. But I need two more, one of which has to come from a former prof. I have an MA, but I've been out of school for five years, have no significant contact with my former professors anymore, and even if I did, their impression of The Me That Was Then is different from The Me That Is Now. (They wouldn't say anything horrid or negative, but my field has changed and they're not familiar with what I've been doing/thinking/writing in the last five years.) Mostly I hate hitting them up again. It's embarrassing, and I don't even know if they would comply.Are there any creative ways around this?
