The study highlights various dimensions of papal liturgies, including political, religious, and visual aspects. Particular emphasis is placed on the ritual of opening the Holy Doors, masses celebrated by the Pope in St. Peter’s Basilica, the Corpus Christi celebration, and processions featuring Marian icons.

The Church is governed by the "feminarum senatus" – the prelates complained. Obviously, they were alluding to Countess Matilda of Canossa, who was the most important ally of Pope Gregory in his reform struggle. However, sources produced in the Gregorian environment make us understand that indeed numerous women were very much involved in the Gregorian project. In our contribution, we analyze the texts that speak of women from the diocese of Cremona (some of them anonymous) who were engaged in spreading the reform program. As the reference source, we have chosen the catalog of miracles that is part of the Vita Anselmi, namely the biography of Anselm of Lucca, a close collaborator of Gregory VII, written shortly after his death in 1086 at the Mantuan court of Matilda of Canossa. Based on this text, we will try to present the role of women in the Pataria of Cremona.
Synodalis consonantia. Konziliengeschichte als Spiegelbild kirchlicher Diskussionskultur und Identitätsfindung. Johannes Grohe zum 70. Geburtstag, herausgeben von F. Forlani, A. Frenken, T. Prügl, 2024

Some of the "Gregorian" councils aroused great interest among historians (especially the Roman synods or, in general, synods presided over by the pope), while others have almost been forgotten and cannot even be found in lists of councils. One of these assemblies that has certainly fallen into oblivion is the one convened "apud Sanctum Genesium", probably in 1080, to resolve a conflict that erupted in Lucca between Anselm of Lucca, bishop of the city and a close collaborator of Gregory VII, and the chapter of the cathedral of San Martino. The aim of the article is to try to reconstruct the circumstances in which the synod was convened, establish where it took place, and who could have participated in it.

In the first part, sources relating directly to the stay of the Copernicus brothers in the Eternal City were presented and analysed. In the second part, the author discusses various motivations that could have prompted the scholars of Toruń to visit Rome (the desire to see monuments and become acquainted with the intellectual atmosphere of the city; to earn money and gain experience in the legal profession; to obtain jubilee indulgences and visit holy sites).

The Vita was written shortly after the bishop’s death, probably in 1087, and serves as an important source of information about the Gregorian party in Tuscany and Lombardy. The author is anonymous, but we know that he lived at the court of Matilda of Canossa and was very familiar with the mentality and ideas of the countess’ entourage. In one of the most significant passages of the text the author writes that in 1075 Anselm, tormented by having received investiture with the ring and crosier from the king, left the Bishopric of Lucca and retired to a monastery. Historians who have studied the Vita (C. Violante, E. Pásztor, K. Cushing, P. Golinelli) believe in the veracity of this account; in their opinion Anselm realised that he would be unworthily elevated to episcopal office after the Lateran Synod of 1075, at which he had promulgated a decree against lay investiture. The research of some German scholars (R. Schieffer, J. Englberger) and the analysis of other sources make us understand, however, not only that the Roman Synod had not prohibited investiture “de manu regis” but also that it was by Gregory’s will that Anselm received the episcopacy from Henry IV. The Bishop of Lucca, therefore, must have renounced his office for other reasons. The aim of the paper is to find the real reason for his abdication. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to answer to a more general question: why did some reforming bishops of the eleventh century want to renounce episcopacy? The answer can be found in the letters of Peter Damian, who also asked the pope to be allowed to abandon his episcopal see.

The works in which monks defend their theological ideas and accuse their adversaries of heresy were a response to synodal legislation unfavorable to them. In the paper there are presented three treatises: the Liber de oblatione puerorum by Rabanus Maurus (written after the council of Mainz, 829), the Confessio prolixior by Gottschalk of Orbais (written after the council of Mainz, 848) and the De partu Mariae by Ratramnus of Corbie (written after the councils of Quierzy and Soissons, 853).

In some cases the ideas of Carolingian theologians were indeed heretical and were condemned by provincial councils but there are also some cases in which the orthodox teaching was presented as heretical. According to the author Hrabanus Maur and Ratramnus of Corbie accused Gottschalk and Paschasius Radbertus of heresy even if their ideas criticized by the monks from the doctrinal point of view were fully correct. The author shows why and how Hrabanus and Ratramnus use the accusations of heresy in their polemic with Gottschalk and Paschasius.

In one of the most significant fragments of the text, which was written around 1086, the anonymous author says that shortly after his episcopal election Anselm, stricken with remorse for having accepted the investiture from lay hands, decided to abdicate and to go live in a monastery. The aim of the paper is to verify the historicity of this story in a broad context of the 11th century Church reform.

The author doesn’t pretend to exhaust the topic but to show how selected works of art can enrich the catechesis. There were chosen and described a few examples of symbolic representations of the Third Person of the Trinity: dove (mosaics of the Roman basilica Santa Maria Maggiore and the baptisteries of Ravenna), angel (eastern miniatures), hare (the cathedral of Paderborn) and woman (the fresco in the church of Saint James in Urschalling). These masterpieces of Christian art present the Holy Spirit in the trinitarian context. On the contrary, the charismatic movements in the Catholic Church concentrate on the anthropological aspects of the pneumatological reflection and disregard the trinitarian. That’s why the author postulate to emphasize, especially in the catechesis, the relation between the Holy Spirit and the Father and the Son in order to offer the complete teaching about the Third Person of the Trinity. Ne risulta un panorama storiografico ampio, ma con un profilo particolare, sia per la lunga diacronia − il libro copre quasi duemila anni di storia della Chiesa − sia per l'apertura a contesti geopolitici meno esplorati.

It explores which female figures, under what circumstances, had the opportunity to express themselves and act freely, thereby exerting their influence in familial, social, spiritual, religious, political, and cultural contexts. It also examines the resources available for their empow- erment, education and training aimed at developing the roles they had access to. Simultaneously, it seeks to observe stories and instances where women’s freedom of expression and action was denied – whether due to the ideas they championed or their gender – resulting in violence against them or indifference. Moreover, the intention is to maintain a purely academic character in the texts and to avoid any form of apologetics or politics: we simply wish to give voice to the sources and, through them, to the women of various epochs. Lastly, we believed that a multifocal observation of the topic could enrich this work; hence, we thought to bring together scholars from different historical-humanistic fields (history, archaeology, patrology, and theology) and to encompass the two-thousand-year history of the Church.

However, as many historians and anthropologists have shown, the issue of the cultural meaning of the sense of touch is a very complex research problem. Depending on the given circumstances and contexts, touch can be perceived as a welcomed gesture, inappropriate behavior, the desired closest physical contact, a faux pas or even an 'animal' sense opposed to the 'human' senses of sight, smell and hearing.

The essays presented in this volume address the question posed about the role of women throughout the history of the Church: which female figures had the opportunity, and under what circumstances, to express themselves and act freely, thereby exerting their influence in the family, social, spiritual, political, or cultural spheres, but above all, in the ecclesiastical realm. It explores the resources available for their education and training aimed at developing the functions to which they had access. The result is a broad historiographical panorama, characterized by a unique profile, due both to its extensive range - covering almost two thousand years of Church history - and to its openness to less-explored geopolitical contexts. Stimulating reflections on lesser-known figures and events that challenge established historiographical paradigms are not lacking. One of the most important aspects of the volume is its interdisciplinary nature; within the book, we find research conducted by specialists from various fields: history, biography, archaeology, patristics, and archival studies. A strong aspect of the book lies in the authors’ efforts to measure the gap between an often negative and limiting paradigm of women’s roles and their actual condition in a world that, in any case, was imbued with Christian values.
