The main purpose of the study is to analyze two different Turkish translations of the metaphorica... more The main purpose of the study is to analyze two different Turkish translations of the metaphorical expressions in the novel "1984" written by George Orwell in a comparative and descriptive way in the light of Gideon Toury and Eugene A. Nida's Translation Theories. In this context, the study aims to determine how the metaphorical expressions in Orwell's novel are translated to Turkish and Turkish culture by translators. For this purpose, a total of nine text units containing metaphorical expressions have been selected equally from each part of the source text, which consists of three parts, and analyzed within the framework of Toury's Theory of Norms and Nida's Formal and Dynamic Equivalence Theory. In the study, as the source text, the copy of the original text published by Penguin Books in 2008; as the target texts, the first translation of the original text in Turkish, 1958-V. Turhan and S. Tonguç's translation, and 2010-Celâl Üster's translation, which is the most popular one among Turkish readers, have been used. The current study has been carried out using the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research methods. When the findings obtained as a result of the study are evaluated, it is understood that the target text translators have adopted two different translation approaches. It is seen that the first target text translators, Turhan and Tonguç, have sometimes remained faithful to the cultural norms in which the source text was created, and sometimes to the norms system of the target language and culture while translating metaphorical expressions. Therefore, it can be said that they have produced both "adequate" and "acceptable" translations in the context of metaphorical translations. As the representations of the notion of alienation, fictive neologies help the reader to rational... more As the representations of the notion of alienation, fictive neologies help the reader to rationalize the plausibility of an imaginary world. Through these innovations, science fiction distinguishes its imaginary world from the world we actually live in. The translators carry the neologies as the novum/new words (Suvin, 1979) of science fiction to another language and thus they rebuild (in a sense) the science fiction reality of the target text. In this respect, this study aims to analyze the translation of neologies seen in The Dispossessed and The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin through the approaches of both science fiction studies and translation studies. The findings show that fictive neologies have been transferred to the target texts mostly through transference, naturalization and through-translation methods among the suggested procedures of Newmark (1988). These translator preferences point that the neologies have been conserved within the target texts and the translators have highlighted the function of neologies as literary text elements. Source-oriented tendencies of the translators can be counted as a necessary quality for the comprehensibility of the science fictional texts because they ensure the plausibility of imaginary worlds in the texts. Yet, it should be noted that the neologies alone do not represent the whole world-building and so the examination of multiple infrastructures can suggest more on the translation of science fiction.

Within the framework of intertextuality, allusion must be given utmost importance, because the tr... more Within the framework of intertextuality, allusion must be given utmost importance, because the translators need to have an extensive cultural background and an awareness of the extratextual connections of the text. Allusion, as a cultural and intertextual element, poses important problems in translation. The function and connotation of the allusions in the source text must be maintained in the target text as much as possible. Therefore, translators need to adopt the most appropriate translation strategies. This study aims to analyze the strategies adopted in the translation of allusions in Paul Auster's City of Glass, which is a postmodern detective fiction story having noticeably rich allusions. Firstly, intertextual allusions will be analyzed in both English and Turkish versions of Paul Auster's City of Glass in line with Leppihalme's (1997) category of allusions. Then, how the translators handled the translation challenges of intertextual allusions in Paul Auster's City of Glass will be revealed. Therefore, two Turkish translations of the source text have been chosen and several allusions have randomly been picked from the source text and their translations have been compared. The references made through the allusions will be explained in detail and the strategies of the translators will be analyzed in line with the strategies proposed by Leppihalme (1997).

This study aimed to explore prospective EFL teachers' metaphors of “teachers, teaching” and “... more This study aimed to explore prospective EFL teachers' metaphors of “teachers, teaching” and “being a prospective EFL teacher” at the beginning and end of a ten-week practicum course. A total of 110 Turkish prospective EFL teachers voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews and metaphor-elicitation forms. Results lead to three major conclusions. First, the participants' prior beliefs about the role of an EFL teacher and teaching were affected by their previous experiences as language learners. Second, although the content analysis of the metaphors revealed a limited change throughout the practicum experience, the analysis of the interviews showed the dynamic nature of beliefs held by the prospective teachers. Finally, data analysis of the interviews showed that the variation in beliefs and practices mainly derived from individual experiences with the mentoring practices of the cooperating teachers and the socio-profession...

The instrument is intended to examine the mentoring experiences of pre-service EFL (English as a Foreign he use of the instrument, the study intends to examine the mentoring practices provided by the cooperating teachers for teaching English from the perspectives of preservice teachers. The survey method was used in this study and the data gathered from the pre-service teachers were used for Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis to determine the structure of factor loadings of the survey. Results of the factor analysis will revealed the number of the factors and sub-scales remained in the Turkish version. In addition, the results of the pre-survey described their mentoring experiences during practice teaching.

Thus, this study aims to find out how social gender identity is constructed in the reading passages in two sets of coursebooks, Face 2 Face and English File, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate and upper-intermediate. To collect the data, the reading texts in these coursebooks were scanned and the adjectives used to describe both genders were identified and categorized to determine what kind of characteristics have been attributed to male and female and how their social identities have been constructed.

Interpreting courses, being no exception, had to face various challenges as well. This study aims to investigate the impacts of emergency remote teaching on interpreting courses from the trainers' perspectives. To this end, semi-structured interviews were conducted online with a study group consisting of 16 interpreter trainers with at least three years of experience in teaching face-to-face at the undergraduate level, who had to move their courses online during the pandemic. Observation, another qualitative method, was used for the second stage of data collection to ensure triangulation. In all, four online interpreting courses held by three different trainers at separate universities in Turkey were observed by the researchers. With the technological developments and the globalization process especially after the 1980s, tra... more With the technological developments and the globalization process especially after the 1980s, translations have gained new functions as 'cultural products' that are consumed by the people in various parts of the world. Today, works of popular literature can reach people from diverse cultures in a very short time through translation. These new conditions require the evaluation of the sociocultural functions of these translations with a new perspective in the field of translation studies. In order to analyze these functions of the translated texts, Edwin Gentzler (2017) proposes a framework with the name 'post-translation studies'. Within this framework, Gentzler (2017) draws attention to focus on translation as a form of rewriting and to investigate pre-translation and post-translation conditions in the receiving societies. Gentzler's (2017) approach emphasizes to analyze the translations in their social contexts and to trace the socio-cultural changes that take place in these societies after the translations are put into circulation. As part of 'post-translation studies', this article aims to investigate how Turkish translations of a representative of American popular literature presented American cultural elements in the 1980s and in the 2010s as forms of different rewritings. To this end, Turkish translation of Stephen King's IT in 1987 and its retranslation by the same publisher in 2015 were compared in terms of the representation of the culture specific items. The analyses were based on Pavlovic and Poslek's (1998) categorization of the culture specific items and Aixela's (1996) categories of the translation strategies, which were grouped as being source-oriented and target-oriented on the macro level. Evaluating the results in relation to the socio-cultural context of the receiving society in the 1980s and the cultural changes that have occurred until the retranslation was published, it was found out that American cultural items in the source text were predominantly translated with target-oriented strategies in the initial translation in 1987 and they were mostly translated with source-oriented strategies in the retranslation in 2015. It was also observed that the familiarity of the items belonging to American culture highly increased for the Turkish readers in the 28-year period as a result of the influence of the source culture.

Leppihalme's views offer some justification for each of her potential strategies for rendering alusions. Based on Leppihalme's views, this study aims to show that, whatever strategy the translator uses (retention of proper-name allusion or minimum change of key-phrase allusion), a successful translation entails accommodating the needs of target-text readers when selecting the optimum strategy for rendering allusions. If a translator fails to convey the connotative and pragmatic meaning of allusions in the source text, the target reader is faced with "culture bumps". Such translations turn out to be "puzzling and "impenetrable" for target readers, and deprive them of the chance to participate actively in the reading process. To resolve this problem, a midway solution must be found in translation in order to effectively convey the sense of allusions in the source text to the audience of a different culture.

In order to analyze these functions of the translated texts, Edwin Gentzler (2017) proposes a framework with the name 'post-translation studies'. Within this framework, Gentzler (2017) draws attention to focus on translation as a form of rewriting and to investigate pre-translation and post-translation conditions in the receiving societies. Gentzler's (2017) approach emphasizes to analyze the translations in their social contexts and to trace the socio-cultural changes that take place in these societies after the translations are put into circulation. As part of 'post-translation studies', this article aims to investigate how Turkish translations of a representative of American popular literature presented American cultural elements in the 1980s and in the 2010s as forms of different rewritings. To this end, Turkish translation of Stephen King's IT in 1987 and its retranslation by the same publisher in 2015 were compared in terms of the representation of the culture specific items. The analyses were based on Pavlovic and Poslek's (1998) categorization of the culture specific items and Aixela's (1996) categories of the translation strategies, which were grouped as being source-oriented and target-oriented on the macro level. Evaluating the results in relation to the socio-cultural context of the receiving society in the 1980s and the cultural changes that have occurred until the retranslation was published, it was found out that American cultural items in the source text were predominantly translated with target-oriented strategies in the initial translation in 1987 and they were mostly translated with source-oriented strategies in the retranslation in 2015. It was also observed that the familiarity of the items belonging to American culture highly increased for the Turkish readers in the 28-year period as a result of the influence of the source culture.

This study is concerned with a comparative analysis of the Turkish translations of John Fowles's ... more This study is concerned with a comparative analysis of the Turkish translations of John Fowles's novel, The French Lieutenant's Woman, (Fransız Teğmenin Kadını by Aslı Biçen and Askerin Kadını by Nihal Yeğinobalı), with special focus on how allusions were handled in their translations. Within this context, as a major type of intertextuality, allusions will be the central focus of this study. Specific samples selected from the novel and their translations will be analyzed in the light of Ritva Leppihalme's strategies for rendering allusions, particularly on the basis of her classification of proper-name and key-phrase allusions. It has been found that Biçen and Yeğinobalı's strategies for translating allusions represent two different ways of rendering allusions. While Biçen tried to keep faithful to the source text as much as possible by retaining its allusive characteristics, Yeğinobalı favoured a target-oriented approach by sometimes omitting the allusions that sound quite foreign to the receptor culture. Leppihalme's views offer some justification for each of her potential strategies for rendering alusions. Based on Leppihalme's views, this study aims to show that, whatever strategy the translator uses (retention of proper-name allusion or minimum change of key-phrase allusion), a successful translation entails accommodating the needs of target-text readers when selecting the optimum strategy for rendering allusions. If a translator fails to convey the connotative and pragmatic meaning of allusions in the source text, the target reader is faced with "culture bumps". Such translations turn out to be "puzzling and "impenetrable" for target readers, and deprive them of the chance to participate actively in the reading process. To resolve this problem, a midway solution must be found in translation in order to effectively convey the sense of allusions in the source text to the audience of a different culture.
