It has always been a tradition in organic chemistry to use the stick-and-ball model of molecular structure, to discuss isomers or to derive structural formulas. Unfortunately, this structure-oriented approach is not common in teaching inorganic chemistry at secondary schools at least in Germany: Although metals, sulfur, sulfides, oxides or chlorides are mostly taken as solid substances, in school lessons it is not common to have sphere packings or crystal lattices as structural models of these inorganic solids. On the other hand, true understanding of structures in chemistry requires a sufficient level of spatial ability. Accordingly, this research investigated spatial abilities not only of German students at grades 7-12 of secondary schools (ages 13-18 years), but also a comparable sample of African students in Addis Ababa. In each country, we took samples of two different school types and based our studies on three hypotheses dealing with cultural, grade (age) and sex differences. [Chem.

The paper first discusses the criticisms made on African science education programs. The second part deals with the case of Ethiopian science education. . In the third part the major recommendations made by the researchers will be discussed. Finally, concluding remarks that contain leading questions for future' research on African science education will be forwarded .

It depends on habits of the mind: skepticism, tolerance of ambiguity, openness to new ideas, intellectual honesty, and curiosity. The study was thus designed to find out students' anxiety towards the learning of chemistry, identify the factors that cause the anxiety, examine the disposition of sex towards the learning of chemistry and suggest ways to increase their taste towards the learning of the subject. Data for the study were obtained by administering a questionnaire to 300 respondents. The data obtained were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages and stanine test. The finding of the study revealed that the students, whether male or female, urban or rural based, show great anxiety towards the learning of chemistry and that the anxiety is higher in female and rural based students than male and urban based students. The cause of students' anxiety as revealed by the study includes; redundancy of the curriculum, low awareness of career opportunities, the teachers and their teaching methods and lack of teaching aids/laboratories. To carry out this analysis we have supposed that the historical study of the main qualitative leaps that have taken place in the construction of the theory of internal energy may help to diagnose such difficulties. Thus, we have made a brief description of the main conceptual profiles with in which internal energy can be interpreted by Ethiopian and examined to what extent they are used by students in two public universities. To achieve this we have devised and applied an open-ended questionnaire and interviews. The results obtained showed that most students, in the two universities, have ontological and epistemological difficulties using the idea of internal energy thus preferring the use of reasoning based on the chemical thermodynamics concepts in chemistry.

Science has been treated, unfortunately, as a theoretical enterprise. The major reason for the limited practical activities is lack of resource/financial burden on governments. As a result, many science educators and international organizations have come up with an alternative approach called Microscience.

This is so because the traditional technology has been more accessible to learners even before joining schools. As such they form an important aspect of the prior knowledge of students that are important for constructing relevant and meaningful knowledge. This short papers focuses on making local beer and spirits in Ethiopia.

It is concluded that epistemological explanations and representations specific to the macroscopic, microscopic and symbolic levels of chemistry are important elements for instructional representations to consider in the teaching-learning process of chemistry.
