It meant not only a source of knowledge of the local community, but especially of the time at which it was created. Sometimes photographs were taken accidentally during research trips as more or less documentary material, which were only superficially analysed and served to visually confirm the investigated state, or were a targeted photo documentation of disappearing phenomena, objects of material culture, ceremonies or genius loci of the researched area. At other times, photographs were created as a result of purposeful research and documentation of selected phenomena. The result of this is an interpretive openness and an effort to find and establish new analytical and interpretive processes that would be able to convey anthropological knowledge more effectively. Is art, or in our specific case artistic photography, usable for research or for interpretation of cultural or anthropological phenomena? We try to find an answer to this question by analysing the collection of photographs of the Creative Creatures project (subtitled Last Survivors) from Papua New Guinea, by art photographer Martin Machaj. We analyse not only its artistic rendering but also the ethnological, anthropological content and message of the work of art.

Through a key study in selected localities in Canada, it follows the dishes referred to as "typical Slovak," their preferences, methods of preparation and presentation. As it turns out, the processes of perception of national cuisine or dishes labeled as typically Slovak in the environment of Slovaks abroad often have an emotional charge rather than rational justifications. In general, it could be said that the perception of the so-called national cuisine is a metaphor conditioned by individual experiences, patterns or family and historical experiences rather than a precisely identifiable reality, and they are closely correlated with the formation or maintenance of the national consciousness of individuals abroad. Academic information system (briefly AIS) is a complex information system that is supported by Mi... more Academic information system (briefly AIS) is a complex information system that is supported by Ministry of Education of Slovak Republic in terms of central development project. At present time, it is implemented at 11 Slovak universities. The main purpose of the second year of the project solution is the implementation of the new version of the information system. AIS is step by step integrated with Library information system, System forAutomatic Person Identification, System for Management of Human Resources, Financial Information System, Central Student Register. 1. Development of Academic Information System Intention of our faculty was to change existing system of study to credit system of study with respect of ECTS standarts. The first considerations about integrated information system of study at Faculty of Sciences began in 1977. In 1999 we obtained a Tempus project ISTOFIM which was devoted to developing information systems supporting central university and faculty administration in their financial management as well as in course and examination planning. In 1988–1999 we implemented the Academic information system (AIS) to real operation at our university. In 2000 we presented the results of ISTOFIM project, which gave advantages to our university against the other Slovak universities. So our university gave an offer of AIS for another Slovak universities. Our university successfully ended ISTOFIM Tempus project in 2001 and nowadays our information system is expanded not just to all faculties and departments in our university, but it is used on 12 another Slovak universities. In 2005 our university acquired central development project in which 8 Slovak Universities were involved. The objectives were the development of a new, more modern version, stabilisation of Academic Information System, stabilisation of development and run time environments, common process of hardware and software purchase, experience exchange by analysis, implementation and operation. Вестник ТГУ, т.11, вып.5, 2006 681 2. AIS – list of subsystems • Study management o Entrance examination o Evidence of Study o Study programmes o Time table o Lifelong learning • Additional subsystems o Administrative subsysem o Web presentation o Accomodation o Science and research o Economic reviews o Black box • Supporting subsystems o User management o Code-list management o Human resources management o Claims management o System support 3. Interface with another systems AIS is a complex information system for managing study and research in a university. So it must be integrated with other information systems implemented in our university and in Ministry of Education of Slovak Republik. It is possible to realize interface to any system with defined input-output protocol. Nowadays interface to system Human (payrolls), State treasury, Central register of students, post office is realized. Interfaces to Finance Information System SOFIA, Library information system ALEPH, system for Authomatic Identification of Person AIO are in process. Support for Personal Identification Card administration is also realized in AIS. We are planning to extend AIS with some function of LMS (Learning Management System) and make one integral environment for students and teachers or at least definition some API for intergation with another LMS systems. Building of data warehouses which should consist of aggregate data for presentation and further analysis is very important. Typical using of data warehouse should be in budget creation, universities evaluation, study programmes acreditation, monitoring of entrance eximination results, tracing of development projects solutions, etc. 4. System implementation to operation Process of implementation to operation consists of these important steps: – Installation and parametrisation of system – Data transformation and insertion data to code-lists – Training – Operation It is neccessary to give a support from “top“ to “bottom“ for a successful implementation process, i.e. the support of head of university, who is interested in use of the information system and the support of staff should not be omitted. It had to be specified responsibility of each person involved in information system operation. Willingness and sedulity of each person coudn‘t be omitted. All persons must be aware of advantages and disadvatntages, which information system brings. Information system brings certain order in data flows, responsibility for data, and trasparency of information. Imagination of massive using of the system all over the university from the beginning is impossible. We cannot expect that in a short time it is really possible to evaluate using of this system. It must be a long-term process with the beginning at a pilot faculty or a pilot department. It is possible to expect a contribution of the information system 1-2 years after the implementation of the system to operation. During this time it is necessary to build the infrastructure for…

They live in western Slovakia, isolated in a mountainous environment, with a preserved culture and their own language. Due to the political situation and the unregulated rights of minorities in Slovakia in the 2nd half of the 20th century this group has not been the subject of systematic research and scientific interest yet. Because of their isolation and specific socio-professional inclusion, they have preserved unique manifestations of material, spiritual and social culture, and their own unique language. This language belongs to the German Central Bavarian dialects and its occurrence outside the compact German speaking territories is unique in the territory of Slovakia. The main goal is to promote the efforts and activities aimed at language and culture revitalization, and then popularizing them. The expected benefit of revitalizing activities is a more visible reflection of local traditions today, and supporting values of bilingualism and multiculturalism. Huncokars represent a specific form of adaptation and group acclimatization in a different ethnic environment in the Small Carpathians. Therefore, we consider them as an important part of European and world cultural heritage. The ethnic group of Huncokars is a proof of the cultural diversity and multiculturalism of the ethnic and linguistic environment not only of Slovakia but also the entire Europe.

The authors analyze ideological, linguistic, historical, and sociolinguistic factors which affect the way the French language functions and the position it has in Africa. The French language is the language of inter-ethnic communication, education, the press and science in sub-Saharan Africa. However, it is impossible to conclusively define the place of the French language in sub-Saharan Africa since linguists disagree on whether French is "a second" or "the privileged" language. The article highlights the interaction of the French language and local languages within the framework of the conflict situation of African-European bilingualism and reveals the national and cultural specifics of the French language in sub-Saharan Africa.

The work of a farmer has always represented not only the means of adaptation to the natural environment and the acquisition of essential articles of food and raw materials, but also the realization of one’s cultural identity. Over the centuries, it has acquired its typical features and has become distinct within several regional forms. This has been reflected in the traditional means of transport related to the daily annual cycle of a farmer’s work, as well as various non-agricultural opportunities. The aim of the study is to summarize the knowledge within the field of traditional transport in Slovakia during the first half of the 20th century, exemplified through some typical transport aids. It aims to point out their manifold utilization and their gradual adaptation to the changing natural, historical, and social conditions.
