With the recent proliferation of projects including Black Gotham, Slave Revolt in Jamaica, 1760-1761, Freedom on the Move, and T-RACES an emerging focus on the role that geospatial technologies can have in engaging with the history of race across the African Diaspora has become an important area of digital scholarship. This hybrid 90-minute panel is a timely follow-up to a summer 2016 NEH ODH Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities, “Space and Place in Africana/Black Studies: An Institute on Spatial Humanities Theories, Methods and Practice for Africana Studies”. Regardless of how some feel about the methodology, it has become a viable alternative to more traditional classroom instruction. In fact, distance learning methods such as learning management systems, video conferencing, and CD-ROM programs can yield success in second or foreign language courses as well. While those other computer-based learning tools have produced positive results, this study attempts to gauge the usefulness of an Internet-based virtual reality environment called Second Life. This virtual world, not initially intended for second or foreign language teaching, contains environments that are similar to those found in the "real world" that can be manipulated by users for educational purposes. The subjects in this study-three students in an introductory German class and students of two semesters of composition-45 in number, all felt that Second Life helped their language progression and/or helped inspire their writing. All wanted to see expanded use of Second Life in their classes. introduction Everett Rogers (2003) first described how people adopt and embrace change in his book Diffusion of Innovations. Rogers stated that members of a society do not accept new ideas all at once. Instead, the adoption of innovations resembles that of a bell-shaped curve. The innovators are a small percentage of people who bring about change. The early and late majority of adopters

In particular we evaluate the course entitled,“Social English for Doctoral Students” that is in progress in the fall semester of 2007. This course will activate learners and educators using a variety of support media including Marratech conferencing system and Second Life virtual world platform. The pilot course part of a one year project sponsored by The Norwegian University program (NUV) is entitled,“A Virtual Platform for Life Long ...

Learners can visit such places as gothic cathedrals, cities, museums, libraries, places too dangerous or impossible to go in real life. This three dimensional world exists, created by its residents who are physically located around the world. Second Life has the potential to revolutionize distance education and online virtual communities.

The purpose of these applications was to explore possibilities in using the combination of high-speed international networks and virtual reality (VR) displays for cultural heritage education. Our ultimate goal is to enable the construction of tele-immersive museums and classes. In this paper we present an overview of the infrastructure used for these applications, and some details of their construction.

It was designed to immerse students of the Harlem Renaissance directly in the historical context of the literature of that period. The goal of this prototype is to develop rich, interactive, and narrative learning experiences to augment classroom activities for students in the humanities. This paper describes a semester-long user study using Virtual Harlem in an English literature course and discusses our experiences of integrating virtual reality technology in the classroom.
