This is a loaded question that is not something that can be easily stated in words. It requires us to take a harsh look at ourselves. While we look for the words that we end up using to describe who we are, the truth is more than just pretty adjectives and information. One of the things that defines us is our own pasts. It is the experiences we have had with family, friends and on our own that begin to define us. This means we must strive to understand our pasts and the values that have been instilled in us so we may turn our futures into something brighter How I see it, looking back into one's community they grew up in, every person can see how the values from their community played a part in who they have become. One example is when my family lost our home due to financial reasons. I was 13, which is a major point in everyone's life, and being told to I would have to leave my home, school and friends to start over somewhere else. At the time I was upset, angry and confused. I did not realize then, that the situation and my family around me would begin to solidify who I am. Just as belle hook (2008) stated "Their "Appalachian values," imprinted on my consciousness as core truths I must live by, proved and provided me with the tools I needed and need to survive in a postmodern world." (p. 39), my family showed strength and love by supporting each other even when it was like we had only the clothes on our backs. Looking back, we are able to see that the people we were surrounded by impacted the decisions we made through life and continue to do so. As I had stated in the previous paragraph, my family had lost our home and how I had felt. What I did not know at the time was the values I would be taught that would stay with me through the future. In a new school with barely anything, there were times others tried to make it out as if we were nothing but because of my family, I was able to stand tall in front of those people. I learned that you could stand tall and with pride, even in the face of adversity. My brothers

Vehicles remained parked as traffic lights turned and the people on the street could be seen unmoving, some staring off into the distance and some even crying with no words being spoken. This moment shows how the past is still remembered and while long gone, is still painful as it is meant to represent the six million Jewish people who lost their lives during the Holocaust. In this paper, I am going to go into detail about one of the largest recorded genocides known to man, the Holocaust. I will explain the rationale behind the laws and policies that allowed the persecution of millions, discuss the experiences of those involved from multiple points and examine the significance of the Holocaust as it pertains to then and now. While some parts of this paper may be distressing and disturbing at times to read, they are things that should be studied and remembered. By scrutinizing the principles behind Nazi actions, listening to the experiences of those who survived and understanding the meaningfulness of the Holocaust on today's world we can then construe why we must take steps to never repeat these atrocities and if there are those who do commit them, why we should stop them.
