According to Lave and Wenger learning should not be viewed as simply the transmission of abstract and decontextualised knowledge from one individual to another, but a social process whereby knowledge is co-constructed; they suggest that such learning is situated in a specific context and embedded within a particular social and physical environment. Foreign language teaching is proved to be most effective and optimal only when it is performed in a setting of real communication and performance.

The goal of the present study is to investigate and analyse English language teachers' perceptions and opinions about the integration of target culture into the foreign language courses. In the same vein, this research aims at finding out the connection between the instructors' thoughts about the integration of the target culture elements and students' motivation in English classes. Having been randomly selected on a voluntary basis, the participants of the study included 7 English language instructors, working at a Turkish state university. Semi-structured interviews were implemented as the instrument to elicit data. The results were analysed qualitatively and indicated that the instructors espouse the incorporation of target language culture into the courses; however they cannot allocate enough time to have culturally embedded courses. They claim that these two inextricably connected fields are to be evaluated concurrently in L2 courses. As for the effects of target culture teaching on students' academic achievement and motivation, they unanimously agree that it has a positive and motivating impact on their proficiency level of English.

They yielded interesting results which should be considered in the process of teaching. However, studies limited in number have attempted to shed light on teachers' motivation to teach which is very crucial in the process of learning. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the goal orientations of in-service English instructors at various Turkish universities to reflect upon their motivational profiles. The data of study were derived from 61 (F=43; M=18) instructors of English who responded to the Measure of Achievement Goal Orientations which comprised items about distinct mastery, abilityapproach, ability-avoidance, and work-avoidance goal orientations, and a demographic questionnaire. The findings of the study showed that Turkish in-service ELT instructors have a high degree of mastery goal orientation (M= 4.18; SD= 0.62). There was a significant negative correlation between mastery goal orientation and work-avoidance goal orientation (p < 0.01) and there was a significant positive correlation between abilityavoidance goal orientation and work-avoidance (p < 0.01). In addition, non-parametric analyses comparing English instructors' gender, degree, age and the university they work with instructors' goal orientations yielded only one significant difference. Mann Whitney U-test showed that English instructors who have Bachelor of Arts (BA) diploma adopt more ability-avoidance goal orientations than Master of Arts (MA) holders (p<0.05).

According to , learning should not be viewed as simply the transmission of abstract and decontextualised knowledge from one individual to another, but a social process whereby knowledge is co-constructed. The exposure to spoken language and cultural elements of foreign language is the best way of teaching the language itself rather than grammatical patterns and rules of the language. In this study, we aim to review "situational learning approach" in context with its role and efficiency of teaching spoken language. An experimental study was conducted on the university students in the preparatory classes at the School of Tourism of Erzincan University. Twelve male and 11 female students in the control group and 14 male and 10 female students in the experimental group took part in the research. The language levels of the students were determined by a language proficiency test which is used as pre-test of the study. Language proficiency test composed of mainly dialogues including spoken language patterns. After eight weeks of lectures with authentic sketches which were used as reading materials in experimental group and classical reading materials in control group, the students were given the same language proficiency test as post-test. When pre-and post-test results were evaluated, significant difference was found between the pre-and post-test results of the subjects on behalf of the students in the experimental group. It is concluded that spoken language can be achieved by authentic sketches which are designed to serve as a situated learning setting.

Participants in both groups read 17 passages with definitions as hyperlink annotations for 18 idioms in a scorm package built via an authoring tool. In addition to the definitions of idioms in both groups, the visuals were given above the text in the first experimental group, while the etymological notes were provided as hyperlink annotation in the second. A comparison of the groups' post-test scores using Mann Whitney U test indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the groups' median scores, (U= 1786.000, p = .819).

The data of this phenomenological study come from one-on-one, semi-structured interviews carried out with 8 Turkish ELT students; 4 preparatory class students, 4 first-year students, who take a reading course. The results of the study demonstrated that the participants had a variety of goal orientations which lend support to the multiple goal approach that claims the reasons students have for engaging in the academic endeavours influence the goals they adopt. All the students perceive the reading strategies as helpful. The data of the study evidenced that mastery goal oriented, and high mastery and low performance-approach participants use more strategies than the performance-approach (except for one) and work-avoidant participants. Mastery goal oriented students seemed to be more persistent when they confront a comprehension problem in English. All of them think that there is a necessity to teach reading strategies to the students both in their L1 and L2.
