The activation of the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdk1 at the transition from interphase to mitosis i... more The activation of the cyclin-dependent kinase Cdk1 at the transition from interphase to mitosis induces important changes in microtubule dynamics. Cdk1 phosphorylates a number of microtubule-or tubulin-binding proteins but, hitherto, tubulin itself has not been detected as a Cdk1 substrate. Here we show that Cdk1 phosphorylates -tubulin both in vitro and in vivo. Phosphorylation occurs on Ser172 of -tubulin, a site that is well conserved in evolution. Using a phosphopeptide antibody, we find that a fraction of the cell tubulin is phosphorylated during mitosis, and this tubulin phosphorylation is inhibited by the Cdk1 inhibitor roscovitine. In mitotic cells, phosphorylated tubulin is excluded from microtubules, being present in the soluble tubulin fraction.

Vertical profiles of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within the convective boundary layer (CBL)... more Vertical profiles of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) within the convective boundary layer (CBL) were measured at a tropical forest site in the Peruvian Amazon during July 1996 from a tethered balloon sampling platform. A profiling technique based on the collection of VOCs onto solid adsorbent cartridges was used to take samples at altitudes up to 1600 m above ground. VOC analysis was performed by thermal desorption with gas chromatographic separation and mass spectrometric and flame ionization detection. A total of 26 VOCs were stmcturally identified. VOCs were dominated by biogenic compounds. Highest concentrations were observed for isoprene, followed by c•-pinene, p-cymene, and [3-pinene. Combined, all monoterpenes accounted for approximately 15-20% of the total carbon from biogenic VOCs (BVOCs). The isoprene oxidation products methacrolein (MAC), methylvinylketone (MVK), and 3-methylfuran were observed throughout the CBL. Besides the ubiquitous chlorofluorocarbons, anthropogenic VOC concentrations were at the lower end of concentration ranges observed in rural air. From the vertical profiles, BVOC surface flux estimates were derived. Emission rates were estimated from five vertical profiles using the mixed-layer gradient and CBL budget methods. Emission estimates

The data sample is collected using the CMS detector and a minimum-bias trigger, with the CMS solenoid off. The number of charged hadrons is measured both by counting the number of reconstructed particle hits and by forming hit doublets of pairs of layers in the pixel detector. The two methods give consistent results. The charged hadron multiplicity density, dN ch /dη| η=0 , for head-on collisions is found to be 1612 ± 55, where the uncertainty is dominated by systematic effects. Comparisons of these results to previous measurements and to various models are also presented.

The main argument is that the market-based categories of genre that have been developed in the context of video games obscure the new medium's crucial defining feature, by dividing them into categories (loosely) organized by their similarities to prior forms of mediation. The article explores the inherent tension between the conception of video games as a unified new media form, and the current fragmented genre-based approach that explicitly or implicitly concatenates video games with prior media forms. This tension reflects the current debate, within the fledgling discipline of Game Studies, between those who advocate narrative as the primary tool for understanding video games, "narratologists," and those that oppose this notion, "ludologists." In reference to this tension, the article argues that video game genres be examined in order to assess what kind of assumptions stem from the uncritical acceptance of genre as a descriptive category. Through a critical examination of the key game genres, this article will demonstrate how the clearly defined genre boundaries collapse to reveal structural similarities between the genres that exist within the current genre system, defined within the context of visual aesthetic or narrative structure. The inability of the current genre descriptions to locate and highlight these particular features suggests that to privilege the categories of the visual and narrative is a failure to understand the medium. The article concludes by suggesting that the tension between "ludology" and "narratology" can be more constructively engaged by conceptualizing video games as operating in the interplay between these two taxonomies of genre.
