Unlocking the ocean’s potential to secure a liveable planet
About us
Blue carbon is committed to providing environmental security for future generations by addressing both climate and biodiversity crises. The climate crisis is devastating, with natural disasters occurring at unprecedented levels, displacing millions. Life on earth is declining at a dangerous rate, and millions of species are nearing extinction. We must hit net zero carbon emissions by 2030 to protect 30% of land and oceans. Our ocean holds 50x more carbon than the atmosphere and 20x more carbon than plants and soil. Blue Carbon is at the forefront of shaping a sustainable future amidst the environmental crisis with a tech solution that unlocks the power of the ocean to secure our planet’s future. oPod pumps nutrient-rich, deep sea water to the ocean's surface - locking away Co2 and rejuvenating essential marine life food sources. Our Ocean Garden delivers sustainable aquaculture, using coastal currents to transport nutrients to neighboring kelp and oyster gardens. Initial estimates indicate one Ocean Garden could remove over 3000 tonnes of Co2 annually. Reach out to explore how together, we can forge a sustainable future for our planet.

- Ocean upwelling, nature’s ‘nutrient elevator’ is one of the pillars of life in the sea, and on earth, yet it’s a largely unknown concept. Here’s an introduction to upwelling: what it is, how it works, what it does - and why it matters. Ocean upwelling occurs when winds blow parallel to coastlines, pushing surface water away. This creates a vacuum effect, drawing deeper, colder water upwards to replace it. While cold water typically sinks, this wind-driven process overcomes gravity, bringing nutrient-rich waters to the surface. Here’s why this matters: • Fisheries powerhouse: Upwelling zones, covering just 1% of the ocean, provide 50% of the world’s fish catch, supporting global food security and coastal economies. • Climate regulation: Phytoplankton is the original carbon capture tech - its growth changed the orange methane skies of early earth blue with oxygen. By fuelling phytoplankton with deep water nutrients, upwelling aids carbon sequestration, playing a crucial role in mitigating climate change. • Biodiversity hotspots: upwelling nutrient-rich water from the depths supports diverse marine life, from plankton to whales, preserving biodiversity crucial for ecosystem stability. • Coastal climate influence: When cold water hits warm air, it cools it: like splashing cold water on your face. One effect of cold water plus warm air is fog. In areas like San Francisco, upwelling-induced fog helps regulate temperatures, reducing energy needs for cooling. Ocean upwelling is vital for marine life, human food security, and climate resilience. At Blue Carbon, we’re looking to connect to this ocean superpower.#OceanScience #FoodSecurity #ClimateAction #BlueCarbonLearn More about the Dark Water Elevator: Ocean Upwelling 👇
