Heard of From Good to Great Teamwork for farm businesses? 🤨 Starting end of November through to February 2025, a series of free half-day professional development workshops will be held across South Australian regional communities. The workshops will focus on building communication and collaboration skills to help prepare farm businesses to meet challenges of drought and impacts of climate change. Lower Eyre Peninsula aquaculture farming opportunities now available 🐟🦪🌿 Last year, the State Government introduced changes to allow greater capacity for farming aquaculture species and to support the sustainable growth in established sectors such, kingfish, mussels, oysters and abalone, and emerging sectors like algae. More than 6,000 hectares of water off the coast of #PortLincoln is now available to be leased to suitably qualified individuals or companies for aquaculture farming activities. With aquaculture being the fastest growing primary industry in Australia, these leases provide an opportunity for South Australia to expand its contribution to meeting the ever-increasing global demand for seafood, in an ecologically sustainable way. What does a plant do in the absence of gravity?! Can plants thrive in space?! 🌱 These are questions some of the worlds brightest minds are asking through the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space officially launched at Waite last week. As part of the launch, research quality seeds from SARDI’s Australian Pastures Genebank were launched into space out of the Kennedy space centre, USA. These form Magnitude.io’s 11th mission to space. And this time around, the APG is working with Ben Newsome, founder of Fizzics Education, 15 schools from around Australia along with others in the USA, India and Malaysia, to compare the growth of these same seeds on earth, vs their progress in space under microgravity. Medicago truncatula (or barrel medic seeds – a plant from the legume family) are the lucky travellers, now partway into their 30-day orbit. These real time experiments not only capture the imagination of future superstars of #STEM but seek to tackle critical and emerging questions around future food security during live science experiences. Data from this mission will be available from the open science data repository at NASA GeneLab - in early 2025.
