Poorna Chandrothaya Chendooram (3 mg/ml/100 gm) was given orally for seven weeks. The activity of Cytochrome P-450 and, were significantly decreased but the activity of glutathione-S-transferase were increased in the PCC administered rats rather than in control rats. Significant decrease in the activities of Cytochrome P-450 and Met hemoglobin and increase in the level of glutathione-S-transferase , indicate the defensive cytoprotective effects of Poorna Chandrothaya Chendooram .

The animals were treated with sublethal dose of mercuric chloride (2mg/kg body wt.) for 30 days. During the mercury treatment, the level of Aspartate transaminase (AST), Alanine transaminase (ALT) and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in serum and lipid peroxidation(LPO) in liver tissue significantly increased and Reduced glutathione (GSH), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Catalase (CAT) and Superoxide dismutase (SOD) were simultaneously decreased in the respective tissue. This result indicates that the liver tissue was completely damaged. After mercury treatment, solanum trilobatum extract (150mg/kg body wt.) was administrated in mercury intoxicated animals for another 15 days. Solanum trilobatum extract administration has improved the liver function in mercury intoxicated animal as indicated by declined in the increased level of AST, ALT and ALP in serum and LPO content in liver tissue. The decreased level of antioxidant system (GSH, GPx, CAT and SOD) has been promoted. This result suggested that Solanum trilobatum extract has play a vital role at the time of reducing the mercury toxicity in intoxicated animals.

Mercury poisoining induced oxida-tive stress leading to generation of free radicals and simultaneous alterations in antioxidant mechanism in animals. In the present study, the level of lipid peroxidation (LPO) was increased in the brain tissue of rats at sub-lethal dose of mercuric chloride (2mg/kg body wt.) treatment for 30 days and simultaneously decreased level of glutathione (GSH), glutathione per-oxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) contents were also noticed in the mercury intoxicated brain tissue. During the recovery span an altered level of antioxidant status was restored to near normal level in the brain tissue of mercury intoxicated animal when treated with ethanolic ginger extract (200mg/kg body wt.) For another 15 days. Ginger play a vital role to detoxify mercury toxicant in the mercury intoxicated animals. The results were discussed in detail.

Current research is now directed towards natural antioxidants originated from plants due to safe therapeutics. Azima tetracantha Lam is used in Indian traditional medicine for a wide range of various ailments. To understand the mechanism of pharmacological actions, antioxidant properties of the Azima tetracantha Lam leaves extract were tested using standard in vitro models. The ethanolic extract of Azima tetracantha Lam exhibited strong scavenging effect on superoxide, nitric oxide radical and reducing power radical scavenging assay. The free radical scavenging effect of Azima tetracantha Lam extract was comparable with that of the reference antioxidants. The data obtained in the present study suggests that the extract of Azima tetracantha Lam leaves have potent antioxidant activity against free radicals, prevent oxidative damage to major biomolecules and afford significant protection against oxidative damage.

Aqueous extract of Morinda tinctoria (MTR) on blood glucose, haemoglobin, glycosylated haemoglobin, plasma insulin, serum lipid and the levels of lipid peroxides and antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and reduced glutathione, were examined in the liver and kidney tissues of control and experimental groups. Oral administration of Morinda tinctoria (MTR) aqueous extract to diabetic rats for 30 days significantly reduced the levels of blood glucose, lipids and lipid peroxidation, but increased the activities of plasma insulin and antioxidant enzymes, like catalase, superoxide dismutase, reduced glutathione and glutathione peroxidase. The Morinda tinctoria (MTR) aqueous extract supplementation is useful in controlling the blood glucose level, improves the plasma insulin, lipid metabolism and is beneficial in preventing diabetic complications from lipid peroxidation and antioxidant systems in experimental diabetic rats; therefore, it could be useful for prevention or early treatment of diabetes mellitus

Aqueous ethanol and butanol extracts had shown significant protection and lowered the blood glucose levels to normal in glucose tolerance test. In alloxan induced diabetic rats the maximum reduction in blood glucose was observed after 3h at a dose level of 250 mg/kg of body weight. The percentage protections by aqueous ethanol and butanol extracts were 30 and 48% respectively. In long term treatment of alloxan induced diabetic rats, the degree of protection was determined by measuring blood glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol and urea levels on 0,3,5,7 and 10th day. Both the extracts showed a significant anti-diabetic activity comparable with that of glibenclamide.. These results indicate that the Dodonaea viscosa (L).extracts possess significant anti – diabetic activity.
