cheep bleech

Dear lazyveganweb

I want to get my hair bleached soon (see, I do know how to spell "bleach", I just thought it would be funny to mis-spel it in this post's title). I'm going to get a buzz cut followed by bleaching. I know I can have this done veganly at Furr (in Sydney). But I believe they're a bit expensive, and beause I'm having such a simple cut I wonder whether I need to go to an expensive place.

Can anyone tell me please whether I can get vegan bleach by going to any old cheap and cheerful hairdresser?

Thanks!

ETA: I'm told the answer is yes.

Tullamarine

Hi guys,
I have an 8 hour stop at Tullamarine airport on Wednesday, does anyone know if there's anywhere in the airport you can get vegan food? I'd normally just catch a bus into the city for the day but I have an injured knee and have to use crutches so I'd rather just wait at the airport.
Thanks!

Hard vegan margarine?

I've made croissants before with nuttelex, and they turned out okay but I want to make really good flaky ones and I think the margarine needs to be harder, not a melty spreadable kind. Are there any brands like this in Australia?

Vegetarianism in Australia - A History by Edgar Crook, 2008

The first vegetarian society in Australia began in 1886. Not sure about how much vegan content is in this but it is bound to be an interesting read. :)

http://www.ivu.org/history/australia/index.html

It is in pdf form, and you can read chapters, or download the whole thing under a Creative Commons license. Behind the cut are the chapter headings and file sizes.( Read moreCollapse )

Do people think it is worth also posting to veganpeople? Not just for Australians but others interested perhaps. :)

Edit: lols reading this back some time later, I realised I wrote January when I meant December, oops.

Leigh-chantelle who speaks in the video is looking for volunteers. They had 55 help out this year!

It's a fun day with a lovely vibe as you would expect at a vegan event. Had a great time at the 2010 event, which was called Green Earth Festival, and met some cool people, saw The Cove there free of charge in the mini cinema and looked at heaps of yummy food, but had already eaten!

I filmed most of this and edited it up for Leigh-chantelle and the Green Earth Group. :)

Christmas gifts

I'm starting to think of Christmas gifts.

I'd like to give my mother a vegan cookbook. She's fine with veganism and vegan food and I think she'd be enthusiastic to start cooking more vegan meals for herself and for her husband, who has diabetes. I'm thinking of either Vegan Brunch or Now Vegan. They're both visually appealing books. I don't have Vegan Brunch myself but am told that a lot of the recipes take a lot of time or work to make - is this true? It's the only thing holding me back from choosing that book, because otherwise I've heard it's the kind of book you keep coming back to.

For those of you who are familiar with one or both of these books, any advice on which would make a good gift for someone unfamiliar with vegan cooking but likely to embrace the experience?

Has anyone had any good ideas re ethical Christmas presents?

I've also been looking through the Herbivore catalogue and at Etsy, and am planning to go to a couple of local craft markets in the next month. I'll also just be baking things.

Anyone know what the hell to buy for dads?? (Mine is a builder so already owns just about everything Bunnings stocks, *sigh*.)

Hi there,

Just going to Cairns in three weeks and am getting a little bit anxious about the amount and availability of vegan food up there. Anyone been there recently with any ideas on where to eat?

Thanks
