In early childhood education pupils have the opportunity to come into first contact with the hist... more In early childhood education pupils have the opportunity to come into first contact with the historical events and acquire the first historical knowledge. However, research has shown the existence of strong nationalist elements and the viewing of the nation as a homogeneous entity and an unchanged Hellenism. The Greek educational system does not take into account the cultural background of students coming from other countries. This issue is the reason for conducting this survey, which studied the views of prospective teachers on national celebrations, namely their role and content. Their views on speeches, on the reproduction of national identity, on national and political education and the institution of parades in the context of the multicultural school are also explored. The issue of research considers that prospective teachers agree with the conduct of national celebrations in multicultural schools, but in a way that should include other cultural groups as well. The survey was conducted in spring of 2014, using a questionnaire with sixty close questions. The sample of research consists of 120 students of the departments of primary and pre-school education in the Faculties of Education in Thessaloniki and Alexandroupoli and the department of Early Childhood education in Thessaloniki (A.T.E.I.). According to the research results, the celebration of national holidays in schools should not be abolished as national holidays contribute to pupils learning about the history of the country and maintain historical memory. What should be done, however, is to change the way national holidays are presented in schools and the specific values they promote to pupils.

The fundamental aim is to investigate whether and how the cultural and linguistic background interferes in the relationships of kindergarten pupils. Thus, the observation of two different kindergartens in Greece has taken place, in order to identify those characteristics and attitudes that contribute to the healthy relationships between pupils of different backgrounds. The most vital result that was derived from the interviews with the students and teachers is the fact that racist attitudes usually leads to rejection and social isolation of children from cultural minorities, based mainly in racial and linguistic stereotypes that children have towards their peers. Moreover, in the notion of the "other" and especially in the concept of what is regarded as different, students tend to behave with stereotypes, with impressions and images of features of people, which simplify and generalize these characteristics.

The present article examines the main factors which affect the educational status of Roma children and presents a survey which was conducted in the area of Thessaloniki in northern Greece focusing on the school career of 117 Roma children. Following their educational course from primary to secondary school and high school, the survey highlights an extended school failure of Roma children, as there is still a large percentage of children not attending school or presenting poor attendance and leakage from the school system. The survey confirms that for school to become accessible, attractive and effective for children belonging to cultural, ethnic and social minority groups, specific characteristics of each group should be taken into account in the content of analytical school programs across the educational process.

This research paper has a dual purpose: to present quantitative data relating to the production of movie posters advertising Hollywood children's movies, and to provide a semiotic analysis of the posters' content based on a number of semantic codes. The paper examines movie posters as socially generated products and as carriers of ideology. The sample was chosen based on the movies' US Box Office ranking, and comprises the one hundred highest-grossing children's movies produced from the 1930sand more specifically 1937, with the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfsto August 2012, when the research was conducted. As regards the designation "children's", movies aimed at audiences of up to fifteen years old were chosen, based on their age rating.

It is even striking that the rhetoric about corruption has been incorporated in the rhetoric about crisis. Thus, in the era of the Greek crisis, corruption seems to occupy a certain role in the social, economic and political life.

In this context, a properly functioning market economy is supposed to promote individual freedom, thereby enhancing also the inclusion of individuals in societal structures. However, the increasing percentages of new forms of social vulnerability and social exclusion in the EU and especially, in Eurozone peripheral countries such as Greece, indicate the existence of extended problems in reaching the aforementioned objective. Such a social problem is the emergence of the group of NEETs (young people aged 15-24 not included in education, employment or training). The aim of this paper is to examine NEETs in the EU and especially in Greece, based on recent data, in order to investigate and analyze their basic characteristics, the causes and the possible effects of this social phenomenon in the context of the modern individualized market society which aims both at achieving individual autonomy and social inclusion for each and every citizen.

In a society where gender equality is constitutionally enshrined and displayed as an educational policy objective, it attempts to examine if school textbook images respond to the demands of social reality, or perpetuate outdated gender stereotyped educational practices. The visual communication system that school textbooks use has the same rhetoric in of the conveyance of ideological and cultural messages as the linguistic system. Therefore, students receive plenty of information from both communication systems about the roles and stereotypes that are considered appropriate for each sex. In the past, several studies have analyzed the linguistic system, while this is the first attempt at an organized and systematic analysis of the visual system in language textbooks, and specifically the one in 6th Grade. Both content analysis, as a measurement technique, and semiotics, as a visual analysis method, were used as a research method. The analysis of data showed that (a) the presentation of the two sexes in the illustration of this language textbook is not objectively compared with social changes, (b) apart from the quantitative inequality that exists in the presentation of the two sexes, there also appears to be a big difference in qualities such as behavioral characteristics, occupations, and activities, and (c) there is a reduction in the representation of outdated gender stereotypes, which is not necessarily positive, as the diversity of roles they undertake in the modern social sphere is not emphasized.

Greek student movements are interwoven with political agility, controversies and political innovations. Nowadays research has demonstrated that Greek people, and, in particular, students have presented a kind of political apathy. The present paper aims at highlighting Greek students' views, perceptions and attitudes concerning the political system and the political structures and institutions that contribute to the formation of the political culture in Greece. The results indicate that students contradict political leadership, by soundly scorning those involved in politics, considering them accountable for the current profile of politics; in addition, they strongly question the function of the political institutions, in general, as well as any ideological morph associated with political action.

Especially in Greece, where the phenomenon of social diversity is far from intense, based on hereditary qualities or structured classes recognized by law, the issue of social class groupings, which compose the Greek society, is the focus of the relevant discussions. The degree the children assimilate the attitudes and perceptions of class is of a special interest. Based on the previous statements, the present research attempts to obtain evidence of the stereotyped views of Greek pupils aged between 11 and 12 years, about the social class characteristics and occupations. The purpose of the research is to confirm the degree of assimilation of the notions mentioned before. The research was conducted in Primary State schools of Florina and Athens and 99 pupils participated in it. They were asked to describe, the traits matching the following occupati...

The selected chapters (13-16 of the third (C) section) are included in the student's school book and they are chosen because of their deep political hue and individual political messages emerging in symbolic or declaratory field. The researching historic interest is focused on the main frame transition from the Roman to the Byzantine world, with references to the social, juridical-legal, economic, cultural and political structures. The constructed narrative shows off the presentation of the Byzantine Emperor. The main objective is to understand and study the epistemological potential of a marxistic proposal posed as an open issue: a) What is the subject in the process of teaching history? b) What we teach in history class (content), to whom we address (configuration personal characteristics), why, who pose the questions and why? Thus we suggest three possible methods: a) qualitative content analysis-and particularly critical discourse analysis-of textbooks, b) a review of education policy, c) a pedagogic composition through critical dialectical analysis in order to comprehend the marxistic historicity which seems to be hiding. The research attempts to elucidate the students’ perceptions about and attitudes towards the different semantic description of the specific terms in History as well as everyday life. The sample consists of 138 written texts produced by students attending Greek Universities. The content analysis of the texts under research reveals the stereotypical confusion about the historical, topological and cultural meaning of the terms in a Eurocentric view. The semiotic analysis highlights specific choice and use of notions and paradigms about the states that belong in the West-East. The results of the analysis demonstrate that national history teaching as well as the discourse of the media construct stereotypical perceptions about people and life in the West-East.

In essence they serve as modern totems that bear a special relationship to the nations they represent, distinguishing them from one another and reaffirming their identity boundaries. National anthems transfer a message that is purposively, meticulously constructed, with leaders of national governments consciously selecting its elements. In this paper the content and the “hidden” meanings of 18 national hymns (Russia, Argentina, Austria, Mexico, Canada, Greece, Cuba, Bulgaria, Germany, F.Y.R.O.M., U.K., Serbia, Romania, Albania, Australia, U.S.A., France and Belgium) will be analysed. An attempt will be made to investigate the nationalistic, propagandistic and sometimes the chauvinistic elements they include. The content analysis method we will be employed to identify the constituents, that unite individuals under the same flag, oath, anthem, and so on. These encompass a general feeling of belon...

A total of factors affects this progress. These factors are related to the program of kindergarten, the practices that are applied, the surrounding area, the relations between the kindergarten teacher and the broader social

The relations of the authority with its citizens are determined by specific regulations and rules, which are supposed to reflect the " social contract ". However, the use of state violence in modern societies is being increased during the periods of economic and political crisis. Thus, in Greece during the years of crisis the use of violence by the state mechanisms is an everyday phenomenon. Our research is analyzing the attitude of Greek university students towards state violence in Greece. Regarding methodology, two methodological tools were used, meeting the requirements of the research: a questionnaire with closed questions, in order to quantitatively investigate the attitudes of students regarding various issues, with a 5/point scale Likert. Moreover, a quantitative content analysis was used, 19 investigating a basically qualitative research material, which was derived from the responses to open-ended questions, concerning the perceptions of the university students towards the topic of state violence.

In this research, we focus on 100 fan slogans and 79 fan stickers, as linguistic and iconic messages, produced in 2011 by young fans belonging to fan clubs of Aris FC Thessaloniki. We think of social identity as a “production”, which is never complete, is always in process and holds a prominent place (Hart, 2009). Especially in the framework of modernity, the transition from family and community life to the real urban sphere widens the gap between different generations’ values and attitudes. At the same time, this situation provides a “fruitful field” for anomie and deviancy amplification (Orru, 1983). A socio-semiotic analysis (Barthes, 1977; Kress, et al 1996; Lagopoulos & Βoklund-Lagopoulou, 1992; Randviir & Cobley 2010) is applied to both slogans and stickers, in order to determine the messages’ ideology and their relation to the world of fans. The analysis suggests that youth sports subcultures need to produce discourses against the majority of adults’ established power, and do so through a special, almost aggressive mode.
