Excavation and field survey projects representing this period are largely implemented with a traditional archaeology approach, which is highly dependent on architectural documen- tation and typology of finds only. Considering the large number of current projects and the size of the collected data, and being conscious that archaeological excavation is a destruction and a place can be excavated only once, how sufficient are the applied practices and documen- tation methods? What is the spatial and contextual resolution of the data collected? Can they be re-studied by different researchers with new approaches and methods that will emerge in the future. Potential and quality of the knowledge produced is an important issue that should be questioned.
The lack of awareness of researchers on the current archaeological theory and methods limits the potential of the discipline, causes loss of scientific knowledge and puts the discipline in a vicious circle.
This article, being aware that the above-defined problematic is a common deficiency of the sub-disciplines that investigate all periods, discusses the state of the theory and methods, its development and reviews the sample applications limited to the Medieval Archaeology in Tur- key. It aims to contribute to this field by determining the situation to raise awareness to break out of the vicious circle and produce more optimal and reliable scientific information, and prevent data loss. While the importance of archaeological theory and method can be concre- tized through many study subjects, this article addresses the problem with a case study through archaeobotanical and microdebris data in the context of Medieval Archaeology.

Other than these features and refuse contexts in the Late Antique / Early Byzantine period Domus at Pompeiopolis, the central sewer, and the drainage have the potential to provide alternative information related to the consumption, production, and discard behaviors of the households and the community in general. In this paper, microdebris samples taken from the street sewer, the drainage of the Domus, and a direct refuse link from a kitchen space adjacent to the street sewer were analyzed and discussed in consideration of the formation processes of the archaeological record.

From the late ninth through the twelfth centuries, building small churches became a trend as rural settlements and monastic communities expanded across the countryside. During extensive surveys at Komana, near Tokat in Turkey, a number of churches were identified in rural contexts through scattered architectural fragments, especially brickwork typical of the Middle Byzantine period. These sites were later revisited for intensive collection in an attempt, firstly, to test whether identification of Middle Byzantine churches through qualitative data could be verified and, secondly, to improve our understanding of site types and their extent in the rural landscapes of Middle Byzantine Komana. In this article, the results of the intensive surveys will be discussed in the context of the new trends of the Middle Byzantine period.

In the 2021 excavation season, 32 flotation samples were processed representing the multi-period occupation of the domestic complex. In this paper, macrobotanical materials recovered from the flotation samples are analyzed. The results are discussed in relation to the sample contexts representing different phases of the Domus.

long-term impacts on various aspects of life in
the region. Based on the archaeological evidence,
it can be suggested that the settlement
dynamics started to change during the period

In 2015 preliminary results, including information on the 17th-18th-century Ottoman village, 12th-early 14th-century Danishmend/Seljuk fortified settlement and 11th-12th-century Middle Byzantine churches with an associated graveyard, were published as an interdisciplinary monograph. Since then, the excavations have revealed evidence regarding earlier periods at the site. In this paper, this earlier evidence is presented with the hopes of a better understanding of Komana during the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods.

An extra attempt was made not only to integrate zooarchaeological and archaeobotanical but also artifactual data. This approach aimed to see the complete picture of the archaeological record, where environmental data were considered as important as artifacts and would contribute to a comprehensive interpretation of the archaeological record.
A workshop/domestic building complex from the Byzantine site of Komana has been used to illustrate an efficient merge of these different categories of data. In particular, one room was given a special attention and investigated in detail.
The fill of the room contains numerous highly fragmented sherds of coarse storage vessels, burnt cooking pots and glazed fine ware. Large number of animal bone remains has also been recovered. Furthermore, a considerable number of plant remains, originating from burnt layers, ovens and pits, has been recovered.

At these preliminary visits at this site, which had struck me with its peculiar social, administrative and economic characteristics during my PhD research and which proved to have a great potential in understanding the archaeology, history and religion in Hellenistic Pontus, we have observed that the ruins were buried under deep aluvial depositions and further archaeological work would be difficult due to geomorphological processes at the site. Yet, the hill in the middle of the village of Kılıçlı (Gümenek) and the scattered architectural fragments around this hill and in the village indicated that it would be worth initiating further research at the site. In the month of October of the same year, a small team of four began surveys which continued until 2009. During the surveys both the immediate area around the hill mentioned above (Hamamtepe) and the area within the borders of Roman Komana which coincided with the Merkez province of modern day Tokat was investigated. These surveys enabled us to define the urban borders of Komana with the help of architectural remains and the identification of the necropoleis. Surveys also indicated that communities continuously existed in the larger territory from the Late Chalcolithic period onwards. Sites dating to various periods were identified however, the Middle Byzantine sites had signaled a unique settlement network. XIV Cultural Directorate, Museum, Office of Tokat Provincial Administration, Members of the Provincial Council, especially Daim Namlı. The village of Bula welcomed us to their village with the initiative of the vilage headman Ahmet Yılmaz. We are very thankful for their hospitality.
