Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the analgesic usage by the medical prescribers at the inpatient and outpatient clinic of a teaching hospital. The study was a descriptive cross-sectional analgesic utilization study, the age, sex, the drugs prescribed per patient were recorded and analgesic prescriptions were analyzed by Pearson test and statistical significance was determined at P<0.05. A total of 2920 prescriptions were analyzed, 88.9% of the patients were prescribed analgesics, 51.9% were males, majority of them were between 21 to 41 yrs (30.5%). Acetaminophen was the most prescribed analgesic (46.1%), the most prescribed analgesic combination was ketoprofen and ibuprofen (14.4%), 75.6% of the patients were placed on analgesic oral dosage forms and majority of these drugs were prescribed in generic names.

Dyspepsia was associated with the intake of alcohol (p less than 0.0054) and Cola nut (p less than 0.00013). The prevalence increased with age; the mean length of history was nearly four years and over half of the subjects with dyspepsia had sought medical advice, mainly from traditional healers. 12% of a similar group of hospital patients with dyspepsia were previously found to have peptic ulceration, suggesting that the community prevalence for peptic ulceration is 18/1000. In the northeastern part of Nigeria. Information on the prevalence of HBV infection in rural communities is scarce. This study was carried out to determine the sero-prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen amongst primary school pupils in a rural setting in northeastern Nigeria. Methods: Hepatitis B surface antigen was tested for in 150 apparently healthy children in two primary schools in two rural communities situated in the Hawal valley area in Borno State, North East zone of Nigeria using an Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay technique. Results: The overall sero-positivity of Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the pupils was 44.7% (95% C.I: 36.6 53.0). The prevalence of HBsAg was found to increase with age, rising from 40.6% in children aged 10-11 years to 75% in children aged above 13 years. The sero-prevalence is (47.2%, (95% C.I: 37.5 57.1) among males while among the females it was slightly lower 38.1 % (95 C.I: 23.6 54.4%). The differences in the HbsAg sero-prevalence by age, sex and location were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The high prevalence of HBsAg in the two primary school children provides evidence for an urgent mass immunization for children on entry to the schools. 3 Sudan savannah grassland in northeastern Nigeria. The primary schools, one each in Ghung and Burma, have an annual school enrolment rate of 234 and 256, respectively. Methods The study design was a descriptive cross-sectional survey. The study population consisted of primary school pupils drawn from the two primary schools in Ghung and Buma communities.

Research paper thumbnail of Knowledge, attitude and practice of natural family planning methods in a population with poor utilisation of modern contraceptives

Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 2006

Sub-Saharan Africa has one of the highest fertility rates in the world, which is further promoted... more Sub-Saharan Africa has one of the highest fertility rates in the world, which is further promoted by the low utilisation of modern contraceptive methods. Yet, many communities claim to have traditional methods of family planning that pre-date the introduction of modern contraceptives, implying that contraception is a culturally acceptable norm. It was therefore postulated that the study population would have a high level of awareness and practice of natural methods of family planning. We aimed to obtain an insight into the extent and correctness of knowledge about natural family planning methods, and its practice as a guide to the general acceptance of contraception as a concept. Pre-tested structured questionnaires were administered to women of childbearing age in households properly numbered for primary healthcare activities. The level of awareness of natural family planning methods was significantly less than awareness for modern methods of contraception. The awareness rate for rhythm method, lactational amenorrhoea method and coitus interruptus was 50.7%, 42.1% and 36.1%, respectively. For all three national family planning methods, there is a steady decline between awareness, correct description of method and utilisation, a difference that was statistically significant in all cases. The sociodemographic factors of the responders had varying influence on utilisation of all three natural family planning methods studied. Rural dwellers practised the lactational amenorrhoea method significantly more often than urban dwellers. Significantly more Muslims than Christians with four children or more practised coitus interruptus or the rhythm method, while the use of lactational amenorrhoea method was significantly increased with the number of living children in both religious groups. There is a relatively low level of awareness of natural family planning methods in the study population, poor utilisation and wrong use of methods. Therefore, improving the correct level of information on natural family planning methods is likely to improve the use of both natural family planning and modern contraceptive methods.
