Smart devices, cloud computing and wireless internet connections transfer huge amount of data through our daily lives. Increase of the data with new technologies made possible to track various human interactions which were invisible. This situation makes data visualization an ideal way to create a better understanding of urban sociology.
For a long time, scientists used data visualization as a way to present their observations. After the works of William Playfair, narration in data visualization was discovered. My concern in this project is using data as a content for narrative in the framework of visual communication design.
The project has two parts, one of them is the “Cities an Memory” and the other is “Cities and Desire”. These two concepts are adopted from the novel “Invisible Cities” by Italo Calvino. In the novel, Calvino makes the invisible visible, but in contrast to its name, it is not the city which is invisible -but it is the interactions. The main aim in my project is to narrate Istanbul by visualizing its invisible tracks which are results of the human interactions.
