Between 1980 and 2010, Indonesia’s urban population grew about fourfold, from 32.8 to 118.3 million. Using data from National Census publications, this article examines the urbanization patterns and trends in urban growth in Indonesia from 1980 to 2010. The urbanization process has increased the number of cities in Indonesia from 50 to 94 and expanded large urban regions. Most of these expanded urban regions are located on the island of Java, including the metropolitan areas of Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang, Malang, Surakarta and Yogyakarta. The article also identifies the emergence of non-statutory towns and new extended urban regions outside the jurisdictions of urban municipalities. The policy implications of the emergence of such urban areas are additionally discussed.

This paper uses villages' monograph data from 1990 to 2017 to present the extent to which peri-urban development has been occurring in Pekalongan region, as an elaboration of such process in a small city in Java, the densest populated big islands in the world. The study reveals peri-urban development process also happen in Pekalongan Region that shows as an extended urbanization phenomenon from the core to the surroundings peripheries. The elaboration shows peri-urban development in this region is highly concentrated along the national road of Pantura that form a more than 40 km urban corridor. Long term analysis shows the influence of the regional road network as well as the availability of the previous urban centers in the peripheries of Pekalongan City bring strong support to the extended formation of Pekalongan Urban Region. The paper concludes with a discussion of the policy implications of the findings.

This paper aims to bring greater attention to processes unfolding in smaller Javanese cities, and elaborates these processes through Tegal case study. To do this, long-term development is studied in the Tegal region through a time-series comparison by examining the development of urban villages within the administrative area of the region, based on statistical data collected from the Village Monographs (potensi desa) over a period from 1990 to 2017. Urban development in the Tegal Region is described in urban spatial development and urban population concentration to identify and analyse the small towns developed in the region. The study reveals that Tegal has undergone a similar process of core-periphery spatial development patterns that are experienced among larger urban agglomerations. The scattered towns surrounding the core city developed in a variety of sizes. The development of the city and towns in the surrounding areas in Tegal Region converging into an urban agglomeration that could already be considered its own metropolitan region with the city of Tegal as the core.

Residential is generally called as settlement and it is specifically referred to as a house (Hammond C W, 1979; Hudson, 1974). The main factor affecting the physical expansion of a city is the population growth rate and land consumption per capita (Bagheri and Tousi, 2017). Urban expansion characteristics are often locally specific, based on determinants such as economic, social, demographic, and planning (Xu and Zhang, 2017; You and Yang, 2017). Urban expansion rate is generally twice higher than population growth rate (Seto, Fragkias, Güneralp, and Reilly, 2011) and one of the triggered problems is the tendency of over-concentration in certain areas causing imbalance or uneven distribution of service centres. Meanwhile, access to opportunities and employment is often the top reason for people in choosing a residential location (Christiaensen and Todo, 2013; Rodríguez-Pose and Hardy, 2015; Satterthwaite, 2006). It makes the city centre or downtown area most favourable because the large-scale modern activities, social infrastructure and decisionmaking centres are entirely available in the area (Donaghy, 2013). Urban growth also implies changes in land use or land cover (Patino and Duque, 2013).
