Crossroads: General Discussion

This is the place for general observations, questions, analysis, thoughts, and reactions to episode five, "Crossroads". Remember, this post is UNLOCKED. Under the cut are this week's starter questions, but as always everyone is encouraged to go beyond these questions, and to jump into the discussion with other community members as much as possible.

1. This episode is as close as we get to seeing Winters breaking down. It also features some strong allusions to old rituals--open doors, water, and underground passages. So: what were the producers trying to say? (Full disclosure: it's possible that I have a rather alarming amount to say about this question. I apologize in advance.)
