…for Orlando…
One of the best moments after an emotional rally and vigil for the victims of the horrific Orlando shooting at Los Angeles City Hall on June 13 happened on the walk back to the metro. The vigil was moving, defiant, sad, hopeful. The sun set with the flags still flying at half mast. We started the walk back and after crossing the street, turned to see City Hall awash in the colors of the rainbow. A beautiful beacon of remembrance, solidarity and hope.
Today is a great day for equality!
Almost 7 years ago, the Proposition 8 campaign in California was ugly and brutal. I tried to explain to a now former friend who supported the proposition, that I didn’t want to raise my future children in a country that was so intolerant. That I’d rather move to Canada one day because such laws foster a society where it’s okay to treat LGBT people as 2nd class citizens, contributing to discrimination, bullying and worse. This friend replied that she’d visit me in Canada.
Today, I’m so full of joy that my baby will grow up knowing gay marriage simply as marriage. While it’s a time to celebrate, there’s still much work to be done to achieve equality for all in this country. The fight continues but tonight let’s party!
